Big 12 play begins Sunday at No. 15 Baylor

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders begin Big 12 play with a game against the No. 15-ranked Baylor Bears in Waco, Texas on Dec. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Foster Pavilion. The Bears lead the all-time series versus Tech, 56-47, winning the last 31 games dating back to 2011. In the two teams' last meeting on Feb. 15, 2025, Baylor defeated the Lady Raiders in Lubbock by a close, 66-60 score.
The Lady Raiders are one of 12 undefeated teams in the nation after closing nonconference play with a perfect, 13-0 record. Texas Tech has now gone undefeated in the nonconference for just the fifth time in program history, with the four other times coming in 1999-00, 2003-04, 2011-12 and 2019-20.
Texas Tech looks to get its first ranked win since Jan. 17, 2024, when they beat No. 24 Iowa State. Currently on an 11-game losing streak to ranked teams, the Scarlet and Black will also look to get its third win over a No. 15-ranked opponent in program history as well as its first win over a No. 15 team since Feb. 16, 2022 against Oklahoma.
Texas Tech has held its opponents to under 40 percent shooting from the field in all but one game, while holding 10 teams to under 35 percent shooting from the field. Six times have the Lady Raiders held teams to under 20 percent shooting from beyond the arc, as Tech recently held Jacksonville to 7.7 percent from three last Wednesday.
Senior Bailey Maupin achieved two milestones against Jacksonville. With her 11 points in the game, Maupin now totals 1,500 career points and ranks 10th all-time in scoring in program history.
The Lady Raiders 25.8 scoring margin is good for 21st in the nation and fourth in the Big 12. Tech has outscored opponents by at least 20 points 10 times so far, while also outscoring six teams by 30+ points this year. The Lady Raiders have outscored three of the last four opponents by at least 30 points.
Denae Fritz has been getting into a groove lately. Over the past two games, Fritz has averaged 12.0 points per game, ranking second on the team in that category. She posted back-to-back games with double-figure scoring and is shooting 47.4 percent from the field (9-for-19). Her three 3-pointers and four steals over the last two games are a team-high. She also led the team in points against Jacksonville on Wednesday, her first time this season doing so.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The No 15-ranked Baylor Bears are 11-2 on the season with key wins over No. 7 Duke, UNLV, Davidson and UTSA. Their two losses were against No. 19 Iowa and No. 2 Texas. The Bears are averaging 75.2 points per game and holding opponents to 54.5 points per game. Shooting 45.7 percent from the field and holding teams to just 32.9 percent shooting, Baylor also boasts a 35.3 three-point percentage on the year. The Bears are averaging 42.8 rebounds per game, 16.5 assists per game and 7.8 blocks per game. Baylor currently ranks third nationally and first in the Big 12 in blocks per game, while also ranking 10th nationally in field goal percentage defense and eighth nationally in three-point percentage defense (.239).
The Bears are led in scoring by Taliah Scott (22.6), Bella Fontleroy (10.6) and Darianna Littlepage-Buggs (9.9). Leading the team in rebounds is Littlepage-Buggs with 10.7 per game, followed by Fontleroy with 5.5 per game. Littlepage-Buggs ranks second in the country in rebounds (139), while Scott checks in at second nationally in free throws (84) and free throw attempts (92). Jana Van Gytenbeek leads the way with assists as she totals 87 to rank sixth in the nation. She also tallies two triple-doubles on the season. In addition, Kiersten Johnson leads the team with 30 blocks to rank eighth nationally and first in the Big 12.
