Tech defeats No. 15 Baylor in Waco to open Big 12 play

WACO, Texas – Behind a 21-point performance from Snudda Collins, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned their first win over the No. 15-ranked Baylor Bears since 2011 by a 61-60 score on Sunday, snapping a 31-game Baylor winning streak. With this win at Foster Pavilion, the Lady Raiders also picked up their first win in Waco since Feb. 8, 2004 and their first top-15 victory since Jan. 2, 2013.
Texas Tech (14-0, 1-0 Big 12) was led in scoring by Collins, who posted 21 total points, 17 of those coming in the second half, to propel Tech to the win over Baylor (11-3, 0-1 Big 12). Collins, who was in foul trouble and only played 19 minutes, went 6-for-12 from the field (.500) and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, scoring all of her points off the bench. This marks Collins' 12th double-figure scoring game and second 20+ point game of the season.
Bailey Maupin also recorded her 12th double-digit performance this year, scoring 11 points on the night including two free throws with three seconds left in the game to win it for the Lady Raiders. Maupin added three rebounds and led the team with three steals. Sarengbe Sanogo had herself another great game, going perfect from the field (3-for-3) and tallying six rebounds and a team-best three blocks.
Leading the Lady Raiders on the glass for the 10th time this season was Jalynn Bristow, who tallied seven rebounds against the Bears. Bristow also had eight points, two assists and a steal. Gemma Núñez once again stuffed the stat sheet, totaling five points, five rebounds and a team-high six assists. This is Núñez's fourth game this year with at least five points, rebounds and steals.
Texas Tech forced 21 Baylor turnovers and held the Bears to 36.8 percent shooting from the field (21-for-57) as well as 28.6 percent from the three (6-for-21). The Lady Raiders also led with 12 assists, 10 steals, 30 points in the paint and 29 points off the bench.
Baylor got the scoring going two minutes into the game with a second-chance jumper. Tech answered with a jumper from Sanogo, then Maupin added to the score with a mid-range bucket. The Bears got a layup to tie things at 4-all, then Collins scored back-to-back field goals for the 8-4 advantage. The Lady Raiders made it 10-6 heading into the media timeout when Collins found Sanogo in the lane for a wide-open layup. Both teams went on a small scoring drought until Baylor connected with a jumper at the 3:07 mark. Jada Malone immediately responded with two-consecutive jumpers for a 14-8 lead. Baylor connected with a second-chance three, then Maupin scored a layup at the end of the quarter to lead by five.
It took two minutes for a team to score in the second period as Bristow made Tech's first three of the game. The Lady Raiders then went up 21-13 on a layup from Malone. Baylor would go ahead with an 11-0 run before Malone stopped it with a layup to make it 24-23 in the Bears' favor. Baylor made a three to get a four-point advantage. Denae Fritz was able to cut into their lead with a couple of free throws and made it 27-25 at the half. Â
Bristow came out of the half with a 3-pointer for the 28-27 lead. Baylor answered with a 6-0 run before Tech got two free throws by Collins to spark a run for the Lady Raiders. After that, Núñez made back-to-back baskets thanks to two Lady Raider steals to tie it at 34-34. Both teams traded points until Baylor scored five in a row to lead 43-38 with 1:20 left in the quarter. Núñez would stop the Bears' run with a free throw as Baylor led by four going into the final quarter.
Tech got within one thanks to a couple free throws and a 3-pointer from Collins. Baylor responded with the next four points to take the 49-44 lead. Collins hit a mid-range jumper to stop their run, but the Bears answered with a fastbreak layup right after. Collins made another basket, then Sanogo picked up a bucket and a block to cut the deficit to three. The Lady Raiders then scored five of the next six points, highlighted by a triple from Maupin, to retake the lead at 53-52 with 4:25 left. Bristow made a layup after the media timeout for a 55-52 lead, but the Bears hit a big three to tie it. On the next possession, Bristow stole the ball which led to a Maupin layup and the 57-55 lead. Baylor then went on a 5-0 run to take a 60-57 lead with 53.5 seconds left. The Lady Raiders got two free throws from Collins, then with three seconds left, took a 61-60 lead on two made free throws from Maupin to win the game and start conference play at 1-0.
