Komac, Sayfetdinova break record in Lady Raider sweep over BYU
April 18, 2024 | Women's Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. – Moving on to their ninth Big 12 Championships semifinals in program history and first since 2019, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders got another sweep in the tournament with a 4-0 victory against the 5-seeded and No. 40-ranked BYU Cougars on Thursday evening at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
Tech (19-7) kept the doubles point streak going after claiming its 20th on the year against BYU (17-7). Breaking a program record was No. 7 duo Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova in doubles. They defeated No. 41 Emilee Astle and Kendall Kovick with a bagel, 6-0, to collect the most dual doubles wins at court one in school history with 19.
BYU was then able to even the score after grabbing a 6-1 win at court two. It all came down to court three where Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif were taking on Tina Li and Kara Wheatley. The Lady Raiders and Cougars each traded breaks leading to a tiebreaker, where the Tech tandem jumped out to a 5-2 lead and held on to win it, 7-6 (3), and clinch the point.
With the 1-0 advantage, Tech would go on to win five of its six first sets against the Cougars. Once again, Komac at court four would record the first singles win of the match after beating Kaavya Sawhney. Komac only gave up one game in the first set to win it, 6-1, before Sawhney took a 4-3 lead in the following set. Komac would win three straight games to claim the victory with a 6-4 set.
Sayfetdinova continued the pace as she won in straight sets at court three over Kovick. In the first set, Sayfetdinova took the lead after winning it by a 6-1 score. She followed suit with a 2-0 lead in the second set before the Cougar won three-consecutive games for a 3-2 advantage. The Lady Raider came back to tie it at 4-all before getting the break and hold for a 6-4 win.
Clinching the sweep for Tech was Yekaterina Dmitrichenko at court five over Wheatley. Dmitrichenko was down 1-2 early in the first set, but that would be Wheatley's only lead of the night against the Lady Raider after she won five of the next six games to take it, 6-3. Then, Dmitrichenko went out to a 5-2 lead and never looked back, breaking serve to claim the second set, 6-3, and clinching the victory for Texas Tech.
Up next, the Lady Raiders take on host team and No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State on Friday at 6 p.m.
