
Lady Raiders fought hard, fell short to No. 1 Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. – It was a battle from start to finish, but the No. 25 Texas Tech Lady Raiders dropped a tough match to the No. 1 Oklahoma State Cowgirls, 0-4, on Friday night at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
Oklahoma State (26-0) was able to get the early lead over Tech (19-8) after taking the doubles point. First, the Cowgirls won at court two whenever Raquel Gonzalez and Ayumi Miyamoto defeated Mariya Polishchuk and Cristina Tiglea, 6-3.
Tech was fighting at the other two courts but fell just short when OSU took the match at court one. It was No. 7-ranked Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova against No. 5-ranked Ange Oby and Anastasiya Komar. The Lady Raider duo took a 5-0 lead but the Cowgirl pair would force a tiebreaker after winning six-straight games. In the breaker, both teams went back-and-forth until Oklahoma State won it by a 7-6 (5) score.
At court three, Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif, who were down 3-5 to Safiya Carrington and Kristina Novak, won two-consecutive games and saved two match points to tie it at 5-5 before it went unfinished.
The Lady Raiders had a tall task ahead of them – needing four singles wins against a team who has five of their six singles players in the lineup ranked. It was a fight from start to finish as Tech forced five third sets and three tiebreakers on the night.
Oklahoma State would extend its lead to 2-0 when No. 15-ranked Komar defeated No. 46 Tiglea at court one in singles, 7-5, 6-1. In the first set, Tiglea fought back after being down 1-5 to even it at 5-5 before Komar won it.
OSU got its next point at court five as No. 93 Ayumi Miyamoto beat Yekaterina Dmitrichenko. The Lady Raider won a decisive first set, 6-2, before the Cowgirl took the next two sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-0, respectively.
With the 3-0 lead, Tech needed to win out as the Lady Raiders were playing in third sets on all remaining courts. At court six, Lila was taking on undefeated Kristina Novak, winning a gritty first set by a 7-6 (4) score before Novak tied it with the 6-1 second set. Novak held a 3-0 advantage when the match was called.
At court three, Sayfetdinova and No. 55 Lucia Peyre were locked in a battle. The Cowgirl won the first set, 6-2, before Sayfetdinova came back with a 7-6 (4) breaker to tie it. The Cowgirl led narrowly by a 3-2 score when it went unfinished.
Polishchuk has an impressive match against the No. 2 player in the country in Oby. Oby took a 3-0 lead to begin the match, but Polishchuk would win four-consecutive games to make it 4-3 in her favor. After getting to 5-5, Oby would win the next two games to take it, 7-5. In the following set, the two players went back-and-forth to force a tiebreaker, where Polishchuk didn't give up a single point to win it, 7-6 (0). The Cowgirl would lead 3-1 when the match went unfinished.
It would be No. 62 Carrington at court four to clinch for the Cowgirls after beating Komac. The Lady Raider went down 2-4 in the first set but would win the next four games to take the set, 6-4. Carrington evened the match with a 6-2 second set. Komac took a 5-2 lead in the final set, but Carrington would go on to win five-straight games to clinch the match, 7-5.
