April 11, 2024 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – History was made on Thursday evening as the Texas Tech Lady Raiders broke the record for most conference wins in a season against the West Virginia Mountaineers with a 4-0 sweep at the McLeod Tennis Center. Earning its ninth Big 12 victory of the year, Tech would break the previous record of eight conference wins, which was done three times over the team's history (2012-13, 2017).
The Lady Raiders (16-7, 9-3 Big 12) were on fire in doubles, earning their 17th doubles point of the season against the Mountaineers (14-10, 3-9 Big 12). First, the No. 7-ranked duo of Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova put up a bagel against Michaela Kucharova and Momoko Nagato, 6-0, for the first win of the day at court one. With this win, Komac and Sayfetdinova are now ranked in the top-10 in program history with 17 dual singles victories at the top court in a single season.
Then, Mariya Polishchuk and Cristina Tiglea clinched the point with a decisive, 6-1 victory at court two over Maya Bordereau and Camilla Bossi. Just like the No. 1 pair, Polishchuk and Tiglea now check into the top-10 of the record books with 16 dual doubles wins at court two. At court three, Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif were ahead of Ting-Pei Chang and Tatiana Lipatova, 4-3, when their match went unfinished.
Komac kept up the winning heading into singles when she posted a commanding, straight-set victory against Lipatova by a 6-2, 6-2 score to record her 10th dual singles win of the year. Komac also improves to 7-4 in Big 12 matches.
Putting another point on the board was Sayfetdinova at court three against Maja Dodik. The Lady Raider went up in the first set, 5-1 and didn't look back, taking it by a 6-2 score. Then, Sayfetdinova was leading 5-2 in the second set before Dodik cut into the lead, 5-4. The Lady Raider prevailed to claim the match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, as she now ranks fifth in program history with 12 victories at court three.
It would be Lila at court six who clinched the match for Texas Tech. Taking on Chang, the Lady Raider posted back-to-back scores of 6-4 to earn her 20th overall singles victory of the season, making her the first to reach that mark on the team. Lila also moves to an impressive 9-1 in Big 12 play while extending her win streak to seven.
Up next, the Lady Raiders host Senior Day against the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday, April 13 at 10:45 a.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
