Lady Raiders open conference with decisive win at Houston

HOUSTON, Texas – After only dropping one set the entire day, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned a commanding sweep of the Houston Cougars, 6-0, to open Big 12 play at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility on Thursday afternoon.
The No. 26 Lady Raiders (8-4, 1-0 Big 12) began the contest by winning their ninth doubles point of the season against the Cougars (1-6, 0-1 Big 12). The tandem of Mariya Polishchuk and Cristina Tiglea was unstoppable at court two after they defeated Maria Dzemeshkevich and Laura Slisane with a bagel, 6-0.
Clinching the doubles point was No. 7-ranked Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova at court one over Sonya Kovalenko and Sophie Schouten, 6-4, to claim the lead. At court three, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp made their dual doubles debut against Blanca Cortijo Parreno and Elena Trenchova. The Lady Raider duo was down 5-1 before coming back to make it 5-4 before the match went unfinished.
Making quick work of her opponent at court three, Sayfetdinova posted a decisive, 6-1, 6-1, victory against Dzemeshkevich to give Tech a 2-0 advantage. Earning her second dual singles win of the year was Dmitrichenko at court four. Taking on Cortijo Parreno, the Lady Raider would win in straight sets by a 6-4, 6-1 score to extend the lead.
It would be Komac at court five who clinched the match for Texas Tech. The Lady Raider was able to win six-consecutive games in the second set to propel her to a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Gabriela Cortes. Texas Tech added two more points to the board whenever Andreea Lila picked up a win at court six against Nina Skoric, 6-1, 6-4, then No. 59-ranked Tiglea followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Slisane at court one. Over at court two, Polishchuk forced a third set against Schouten and was ahead 7-4 in the 10-point tiebreak before play was called due to rain.
Up next, the Lady Raiders head to Orlando, Fla., for another Big 12 match against the UCF Knights on Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. CT.
