Lady Raiders draw Furman in Blue Gray National Tennis Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas – After a perfect weekend in Santa Barbara, Calif., the Texas Tech Lady Raiders are again on the road heading to Montgomery, Ala., for the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on February 23-24. The Lady Raiders' first match will be on Friday at 12:30 p.m. against the Furman Paladins at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center.
The No. 22 Lady Raiders (5-3) are coming into the tournament weekend with a four-match winning streak after victories over Jacksonville State, Arizona, Santa Barbara and fellow Big 12 member, Kansas. No. 59 Cristina Tiglea has led the Lady Raiders from court one where she went 3-0 over the stretch, including two wins over ranked opponents to garner Big 12 Player of the Week honors. Junior Avelina Sayfetdinova has led the Lady Raiders in dual singles wins over the streak going 4-0 on court three. Tech has also won two of their past three doubles points led by the No. 7 tandem of Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac. The pairing led the team by recording a 3-0 mark during the past four matches.
The Lady Raiders are also no strangers to the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic. During the 2022-23 season, Tech finished second in the tournament with wins over then No. 58 Yale, 4-0, and No. 31 Arizona, 4-0, both of whom are in the pool this season as well.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Furman Paladins (2-5) are heading to Montgomery with wins over Liberty and UNC-Asheville. Freshman Macy Hitchcock leads the team in dual singles wins with a 4-3 record on court five and accounts for thirty percent of their dual singles victories this season. The pairing of Hitchcock and junior Ellie Schulson lead the Paladins in dual doubles win percentage with a .500 record on the year.
Texas Tech and Furman have history with each other in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic. The two schools met each other for the first and only time during the 2021-22 season in the third-place match. Furman was able to take the quick 1-0 lead off the doubles point, then captured a 4-2 victory for third place.
The other schools involved in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic include No. 36 Alabama, No. 43 Arizona, No. 24 Illinois, Tulsa, No. 59 Wake Forest and No. 26 Yale.
