FORT WORTH, Texas – It was a dominating performance for the Texas Tech Lady Raiders at the ITA Texas Regional tournament this week as the team recorded 18 overall wins, saw a singles player advance to the quarterfinals after picking up her first ranked singles win, and totaled two doubles teams in the semifinals, with one of those pairs coming home with the regional title.
The tandem of Mariia Hlahola and Avelina Sayfetdinova were on a championship run, securing their second doubles title this fall with a victory over a ranked TCU pair in the finals. In doing so, the Lady Raider duo qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championships in November. This is the third-straight year that Tech had a doubles team in the regional finals as the Lady Raiders posted back-to-back years with a doubles duo winning the trophy at regionals.
Texas Tech got things started last Thursday with freshman Elena Daskalova in the singles qualifying draw. Daskalova would advance to the main draw after picking up two singles wins in qualifying, defeating UT Arlington's Maria Araoz-Gosn, 6-1, 6-0, and 4-seeded Valeriia Krokhotina of Houston, 6-3, 6-4. Daskalova fell in a tough match during the first round of the main draw to Rice's Divna Ratkovic, who was the nine seed, by a 1-6, 6-1, 0-6 score.
Junior Andreea Lila began the tournament as the 9-seed in singles taking on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Leticia Tarocco in the Round of 64 where she came out with a dominating, 6-0, 6-1 win. In the following round, Lila beat Rice's Darya Schwartzman, 6-2, 7-5, before she picked up another win in the Round of 16. She would advance to the quarterfinals after taking down her first ranked singles opponent in former Lady Raider and two-seed, No. 27 Cristina Tiglea of Baylor, in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-3. The Lady Raider fought valiantly in the quarterfinals against Texas A&M's Daria Smetannikov, but fell in three sets, 1-6, 7-6 (6), 2-6.
Arina Oreshchenkova added another win for the Lady Raiders in the singles main draw after getting a Round of 64 victory against Rice's Saara Orav, 7-6 (4), 6-3. She would fall in the next round to 9-seeded Longhorn, Ariana Anazagnasty-Pursoo.
In the singles consolation draw, a Lady Raider was able to make it to the semifinals. Hlahola advanced to the Round of 16 due to a walkover by her opponent, then took down North Texas' Stadfany Nformi, 6-4, 6-1. Hlahola withdrew from singles after making it to the semifinals after a doubles finals appearance. Daskalova added two more wins to her regionals resume in consolation after downing SMU's Carolina McGinley, 6-1, 6-0, and UTSA's Letizia Corsini, 6-2, 7-6 (9).
In doubles, two Tech teams made it to the semifinals, with one going on to the finals and claiming the championship. First, the 8-seeded duo Hlahola and Avelina Sayfetdinova only gave up three games in their first two matches after taking down the Texas State pair of Sofia Fortuno and Maria Andrea Lora Meza in the first round, 8-1, before beating 9-seeded Sophie Llewellyn and Kayla Schefke of SMU, 8-2. Hlahola and Sayfetdinova recorded a quarterfinal victory against Longhorn duo and 3-seeded, Ashton Bowers and Vivian Ovrootsky, 8-5.
Then, the Tech tandem picked up a ranked win against No. 12 and 1-seeded Isabel Pascual and Jade Otway of TCU in come-from-behind fashion, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5), to get to the finals. In the championship match, the Lady Raiders never gave up the lead as they took down 2-seeded and No. 47-ranked Yu-Chin Tsai and Tomi Main of TCU, 6-3, 6-4, to secure the title.
The 6-seeded tandem of Lila and Yekaterina Dmitrichenko got wins against Baylor's Lauren Littell and Nanaka Sato, 8-3, as well as 9-seeded McGinley and Drew Morris of SMU, 8-5, to open up doubles play. They would advance to the quarterfinals, where they added a victory over 4-seeded Kennedy Gibbs and Tiglea of Baylor by an 8-4 score. In the semifinals, the Lady Raiders lost in a heartbreaker to TCU's duo of Tsai and Main, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 0-1 (9). In addition, the pairing of Daskalova and Oreshchenkova recorded a doubles win for the Lady Raiders when they defeated ACU's Eva Arranz and Jessica Board by an 8-2 score in round one.
Up next, the Lady Raiders are back in Fort Worth, Texas to compete in the TCU Invitational on Oct. 31-Nov. 3. Â Â
