LUBBOCK, Texas – Sophomore Avelina Sayfetdinova recorded a come-from-behind ranked singles win and another ranked doubles victory, but the No. 31 Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell to the No. 62 TCU Horned Frogs, 4-3, on Friday evening at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Lady Raiders (13-8, 3-4 Big 12) earned their 14th doubles point of the year after a dominant outing against the Horned Frogs (10-7, 2-5 Big 12). The Tech duo of Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp got things started at court three as the pair defeated Tiphanie Lemaitre and Destinee Martins by a 6-4 score.
Then, the No. 39-ranked tandem of Metka Komac and Sayfetdinova collected their fifth-ranked victory together and 11th dual win at court one when they beat No. 81 Helena Narmount and Yu-Chin Tsai, 6-3.
Over at court two, Olivia Peet and Cristina Tiglea were taking on Mercedes Aristegui and Jade Otway. The Lady Raiders went down early by a 4-2 score, but would come back to make it 5-4, needing just one more point to tie it up at 5-all before it went unfinished.
The contest was a battle from start to finish as both teams tallied four three-setters and three tiebreakers in singles.
TCU would start things off as they won the first singles match of the day. On court five, Komac was facing Martins as she won the first set with a bagel, 6-0. Martins would come back, though, eventually winning the next two sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 to take the match and tie things up for the Horned Frogs, 1-1.
TCU would keep it going in singles after posting two more consecutive wins. The Horned Frogs' second point came at the top of the lineup when Lemaitre outlasted Peet, 7-6 (6), 6-2. Then, Tsai would beat Tiglea at court three with a 6-4, 6-4 win.
The Lady Raiders kept up the fight, getting the next two singles wins on the evening. At court two, Sayfetdinova would tally her fourth-ranked singles win of the year after defeating No. 105 Aristegui. The Lady Raider fell in set one, 6-3, but came back to win the next two sets to take the match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Over at court four, Dmitrichenko was in a battle with Otway as the two went to three sets. Dmitrichenko took set one by a 7-6 (6) score, but fell in the second set, 6-4. The Lady Raider picked it up in the final set, only giving up two games to win it 6-2 and tie the match at 3-all.
It all came down to court six as freshman Andreea Lila was facing Narmount. Lila ended up winning set one, 6-4, before falling in a breaker for set two, 7-6 (2). The Lady Raider kept fighting, but eventually dropped the match, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 3-6, to the Horned Frog.
Up next, Tech is on the road for its final two Big 12 matches of the season as they first travel to West Virginia for a contest on April 14, then head to Iowa State for an April 16 match.
