MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In a match where the Lady Raiders never dropped a set, No. 35 Texas Tech blanked the West Virginia Mountaineers, 7-0, on Friday evening at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts. This victory also marks the first seven-point sweep of a Big 12 opponent since March 12, 2021 against Kansas State.
The Lady Raiders (14-8, 4-4 Big 12) tallied their 15th doubles point of the season after winning two doubles matches against WVU (11-9, 1-6 Big 12). At court three, the tandem of Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp were facing Maja Dodik and Tatiana Lipatova. The Lady Raiders won four of the first five games to take a 4-1 lead, before giving up just one more game to the Mountaineer pair. Tech would win the remaining two games to take the match, 6-2, for the slight advantage.
Tech clinched the doubles point at the top of the lineup as No. 36 Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova posted an impressive win over Camilla Bossi and Ting-Pei Chang. Komac and Sayfetdinova went out to a hot start, taking a 4-0 lead over WVU's duo. But, Bossi and Chang rallied back to win three-straight games to make it a 4-3 set. The Lady Raiders maintained their composure to fight off the Mountaineers and win the next two games for a 6-3 victory, which is their 12th win at court one this year. When the doubles point was clinched, Olivia Peet and Cristina Tiglea were up 5-4 on Michaela Kucharova and Momoko Nagato at court two.
The Lady Raiders kept things going as they swept the Mountaineers in singles without dropping a single set. Ranked No. 122 by the ITA, Sayfetdinova got things started with a quick match at court two against Chang. She would put up a bagel in the first set, 6-0, which only took about 25 minutes to finish. Then, gave up just two games in the final set to take the match, 6-0, 6-2.
Making it a 3-0 lead in Tech's favor was Peet at the top court as she collected a straight-set win over Bossi. Peet and Bossi traded blows in set one as the Lady Raider took a 3-2 lead, then Peet eventually pulled away to claim set one by a 6-3 score. In set two, the Lady Raider recorded the team's second bagel of the night as she won 6-3, 6-0.
At court five, Komac collected her second match clinch of the season as she defeated Dodik in two. For the third time in the contest, Tech put up a bagel as Komac won her first set by a 6-0 score. Both Komac and Dodik went back-and-forth in the following set as they tied 4-4, but Komac would claim the next two games to win it, 6-0, 6-4.
The fifth point on the board belonged to freshman Andreea Lila as she overtook Lipatova in straight-sets for her first career Big 12 singles win. Lila would go ahead 4-3 in the first set, then win two-consecutive games for a 6-3 score. Lipatova started the next set up 2-1, but the Lady Raider earned five-straight games to win her match, 6-3, 6-2.
Over on court four, Dmitrichenko battled Nagato all night as the Mountaineer went up 4-1 in the first set. Dmitrichenko rallied back to close the gap and make it 4-5, then won the next three games to lead 7-5. She would only drop two games in set two as she joined Komac in winning her fifth conference match of the year, 7-5, 6-2.
Completing the sweep was Tiglea at court three where she defeated Kucharova in two sets. In the first set, both players traded blows to force a tiebreaker, where eventually the Lady Raider won, 7-6 (5). Then, Tiglea would lead the next set, 4-2, before Kucharova came back to tie it up at 5-5. Tiglea fought and pulled away with a 7-5 second set to win it.
Up next, Tech closes out the regular season with its final conference match against No. 12 Iowa State on Sunday, April 16 at 12 p.m.
