
Tech falls short against No. 13 Auburn

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 13 Auburn Tigers held off the Texas Tech Lady Raiders on Sunday afternoon with a heartbreaking, 4-3, loss at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (4-2) started off with a 0-1 deficit after dropping two of three doubles matches to Auburn (5-1). Auburn's DJ Bennett and Kaitlyn Carnicella defeated Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp on court three with a score of 6-2.
The Lady Raiders evened up the doubles competition when Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova tallied their first ranked doubles win of the year against No. 10 Carolyn Ansari and Ariana Areseneault, 6-2, on court one.
Doubles came down to court two's Olivia Peet and Cristina Tiglea facing off against Auburn's Adeline Flach and Angella Okutoyi. The Lady Raiders would drop a tough match, 7-5, giving Auburn the doubles point.
With a 1-0 advantage, Auburn would gain another point after Tiglea dropped a hard-fought match against Carnicella on court four, 6-4, 6-3.
The Lady Raiders answered back with their first point of the contest when freshman Arina Oreshchenkova collected her fourth dual match win of the season, beating Flach in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, on court six.
Auburn would increase its lead with a victory on court one as No.43 Areseneault defeated Peet, 7-6 (1), 6-3.
Komac put another point on the board for Tech when she captured her first ranked singles win of the season against No.78-ranked Bennett, 7-6 (6), 6-4, on court three.
Freshman Dmitrichenko then tied the match for the Lady Raiders with her win against Okutoyi in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5, on court five.
Everything came down to court two with Sayfetdinova taking on No. 71 Ansari. Ansari won the first set, 6-3, but the Moscow, Russia native tied things up when she posted a bagel, 6-0, in the second set to force a third. A tough set ensued with both players trading blows, but the Tiger eventually won to clinch the match for Auburn, 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (6).
Up next, the Lady Raiders travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on UC Santa Barbara, Arizona and Kansas on Feb. 17-18.
