LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders travel to Lawrence, Kan., on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18 for three dual matches against the Kansas Jayhawks, Arizona Wildcats and UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
The Lady Raiders (4-2) are set to take on UCSB at 1 p.m. on Friday, before playing doubles matches against Arizona starting at 5 p.m. Then on Saturday morning, Tech will continue with singles play against the Wildcats at 9 a.m., before playing Kansas in a full dual match beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Texas Tech is coming off an 11-day break after playing No. 13 Auburn on Feb. 5. The Lady Raiders put up a fight over the Tigers, but ultimately fell in a heartbreaking, 4-3, match.
In the contest, Tech would go down 1-0 after dropping the doubles point to the Tigers, but not before Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova picked up a ranked win over No. 10 Carolyn Ansari and Ariana Areseneault, 6-2.
Tech would also get singles wins from Komac, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Arina Oreshchenkova. Komac collected her second ranked victory of the match when she defeated No. 78 DJ Bennett, 7-6 (6), 6-4. Oreshchenkova claimed her fourth dual singles win of the season against Adeline Flach, 6-4, 6-3. Then, Dmitrichenko would tie things at 3-3 when she overtook Angella Okutoyi, 7-5, 7-5.
Oreshchenkova, Sayfetdinova and Cristina Tiglea all lead the team with four dual singles wins apiece, while Camryn Stepp has a team-high four dual doubles victories.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Kansas is hosting all three dual matches and is coming into the weekend holding a 2-1 record. So far, the Jayhawks have wins over Wichita State and Oregon, while losing to No. 16 Michigan. Two Jayhawks tally a 2-0 dual match singles record as Carmen Roxana Manu and Maria Titova lead in that category. In addition, Manu and Jocelyn Massey are 2-0 in doubles, which also leads the team.
Arizona boasts an 8-1 record, with their only loss coming at the hands of a ranked Florida team. Two Wildcats – Tanvi Narendran and Kayla Wilkins – are undefeated, 6-0, in singles while three more players have five dual singles wins. In doubles, the pair of Reece Carter and Wilkins lead all other teams with four dual wins as a duo.
Tech will face UC Santa Barbara first this weekend as the Gauchos hold a 1-4 record. Picking up a win over UC Davis to open the season, UCSB last faced No. 24 USC on Feb. 12 losing the match, 7-0. In their win against UC Davis, the Gauchos won the doubles point after picking up victories at courts one and two. Then, UCSB added four more points on the board after getting wins from Amelia Honer, Camille Kiss, Kira Reuter and Valentina Khrebtova.
