Lady Raiders blank UC Santa Barbara
February 17, 2023 | Women's Tennis
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders began their action-packed weekend with a 4-0 win over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Friday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. In addition, the Lady Raiders went up 1-0 on the Arizona Wildcats after claiming the doubles point.
Facing the Gauchos (1-5) first in the day, the Lady Raiders (5-2) had a tall task ahead as UCSB finished last season ranked No. 22 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Without a full lineup, the Gauchos had to forfeit doubles at court three, so the Lady Raiders needed just one more win to grab the point. That's exactly what Tech did as the duo of Olivia Peet and Cristina Tiglea earned a decisive victory over Marta Gonzalez Ballbe and Valentina Khrebtova at court two by a 6-2 score.
Over at court one, No. 50 Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova were locked in a battle with the No. 15-ranked team in the country, Amelia Honer and Kira Reuter, as the Lady Raiders were down 3-4 when their match went unfinished.
Again, UCSB forfeited two points at courts five and six as they couldn't field a full lineup. So, Tech went into singles just needing to win one match. Freshman Yekaterina Dmitrichenko came out firing as she posted a bagel in her first set over Gonzalez-Ballbe, 6-0, before defeating the Gaucho with a 6-1 second set at court four.
At court one, Peet forced a third set over No. 43 Honer as she had a score of 0-6, 6-0, 0-1 against the UCSB player. No. 106 Sayfetdinova was about to force a third set against Reuter as she dropped the first set, 1-6, then went ahead in the second by a 5-2 score. Komac was facing Khrebtova at court three, going down in set one, 2-6, before leading 3-2 in the second set.
Following this match, the Lady Raiders took on the Arizona Wildcats in doubles. Tech would win its second-straight doubles point of the day with dominant wins against Arizona.
First, No. 50 Komac and Sayfetdinova would only drop one game to the pairing of Parker Fry and Salma Ziouti, 6-1, at court one. Then, Peet and Tiglea clinched yet another point when they beat Reece Carter and Midori Castillo-Meza with a bagel, 6-0, at court two. Over at court three, Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp were ahead, 5-1, to Belen Nevenhoven and Kayla Wilkins, 5-1, before play was halted.
The Lady Raiders continue their dual match against Arizona with singles tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., then will face host team Kansas at 4:30 p.m. to close out the weekend.
