Tech splits Saturday matches with Arizona, Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders split Saturday's matches after sweeping the Arizona Wildcats, 4-0, then dropping the following match to the Kansas Jayhawks by an 0-4 score at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The Lady Raiders will be coming home with two wins on the weekend after blanking UC Santa Barbara, 4-0, yesterday afternoon.
The Lady Raiders (6-3) continued their competition against Arizona (8-3) this morning after playing doubles yesterday. The Lady Raiders were able to win their second-consecutive doubles point when No. 50-ranked Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova defeated Parker Fry and Salma Ziouti, 6-1, at court one. Then, Olivia Peet and Cristina Tiglea clinched their second-straight point after overtaking Reece Carter and Midori Castillo-Meza by a 6-0 score at court two.
Tech remained hot heading into singles as they never dropped a match. First, freshman Arina Oreshchenkova earned her fifth dual singles win after beating Fry at court six, 6-0, 6-2. Tiglea kept the momentum going when she put up a straight-set win over Kayla Wilkins at court four, 7-6 (3), 6-1, to claim Tech's third point of the match.
It would be Yekaterina Dmitrichenko for the second match in a row to clinch it for the Lady Raiders. Taking on Tanvi Narendran at court five, the freshman from Kazakhstan posted a straight-set victory by a 7-5, 6-4 score to give Tech the 4-0 win over Arizona.
When the match was finished, Peet forced a third set over Castillo-Meza at court one with a 4-6, 6-3 score. Then, No. 106 Sayfetdinova was in her third set with Ziouti at court two as she won the first set, 6-4, dropped the second set, 4-6, and would tie the match at 2-2 in set three when play was finished.
At court three, Komac was battling Carter as she would come back in the first set after being down 3-5, to win it by a 7-6 (2) score. Carter would force a third set and then take a 1-0 lead in the final set when the Lady Raiders clinched the match.
Next, Texas Tech was set to face off against Kansas (5-1) in a nonconference match. The Jayhawks jumped out to a fast start as they picked up the doubles point against the Lady Raiders.
The Jayhawk duo of Malkia Ngounoue and Heike Janse Van Vuuren would defeat No. 50 Komac and Sayfetdinova, 6-1, before Tamari Gagoshidze and Maria Titova clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 victory at court two against Peet and Tiglea.
In singles, Kansas would continue to roll after sweeping the Lady Raiders. The Jayhawks put their second point up when No. 46 Ngounoue beat Peet at court one by a 6-3, 6-2 score. Then, Komac would fall to Kansas' Carmen Roxana Manu at court three, 6-2, 6-3. The Jayhawks clinched the match at court two when No. 106 Sayfetdinova lost to Titova, 6-3, 6-3.
When the match finished, Tiglea had just won her second set against Gagoshidze, 6-4, to force a third and final set. Dmitrichenko was up in her third set, 3-2, against Van Vuuren at court five, while Oreshchenkova was down 6-7 (5), 3-4 to Maria Costache at court six.
Texas Tech travels to Montgomery, Ala., for the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on Feb. 24-25.
