
Tech finishes fourth at Blue-Grey Tennis Classic

The Lady Raiders fell to No. 18 Wake in the semis, and No. 44 Furman in the third place match
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 24 ranked Texas Tech women's tennis program closed out play at the Blue-Grey Classic Saturday at the O'Connor Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (6-3) began the day in the semifinals against No. 18 Wake Forest (8-3). The Lady Raiders got off to a good start against Wake, as Tech won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead.
Led by Metka Komac and Margarita Skriabina, Tech looked to have a path to the finals, as Komac won her opening set 6-0, before falling four and two in consecutive sets. Skriabina did improve to 5-0 this season against ranked opponents when she beat No. 44 Carolyn Campana 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore Bojana Marinkov won her opening set 6-4 before dropping the second set 6-2. Her match was on serve in the third, before it was unfinished.
After falling to Wake, Tech returned to action against No. 44 Furman (9-5). Against the Paladins, the Lady Raiders also fell 4-2.
Furman took the early 1-0 lead when they won a pair of doubles matches 6-1 and 6-2.
Facing a hole, Tech got off to another strong start, winning four opening sets.
Skriabina kicked off the run with a 6-4 first set victory over No. 54 Julia Adams, before falling one and two in sets two and three. The loss was Skriabina's first against a ranked foe this season.
After dropping a tough three-setter to Wake, Komac bounced back to record a tidy 6-0, 6-4 victory.
Tech's lone other victory against Furman came from Avelina Sayfetdinova who won three and one.
Marinkov won her opening set of match two 7-5, before falling in a pair of 6-1 sets.
