Lady Raider Tennis Travels to Face Oklahoma, Baylor

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team looks to stay hot this weekend when it hits the road for a pair of nonconference matchups against No. 33 Oklahoma and No. 15 Baylor. Friday's match at Oklahoma will be televised on Fox Sports Oklahoma.

ABOUT THE LADY RAIDERS
The Lady Raiders enter this weekend's contests at 7-1 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play following a dominant, 6-1 win over TCU in their conference opener. Texas Tech has won five-straight matches dating back to their 4-0 win at Houston on Feb. 7. Tech is led by reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, who picked up a top-70 singles win over Marie Norris of TCU in last week's win over the Horned Frogs.

Mays is 5-0 in dual singles play one of four Lady Raiders who have yet to lose a singles match in dual play this season. That group also includes Metka Komac (4-0), Olivia Peet (5-0) and Margarita Skriabina (5-0). Tech has combined for a 13-6 mark in dual play this season, which includes a 6-1 mark at No. 2 doubles.

IN THE ITA RANKINGS
For the first time this season, the Lady Raiders made an appearance in the ITA team rankings this week, coming in at No. 29. Tech has one ranked singles player and one ranked doubles team in the latest individual poll as well. In doubles, Kaitlin Staines and Nell Miller come in at No. 43. Staines also appears in the singles poll, slotted at No. 100.

EYEING THE OPPONENTS
Ranked No. 33 in the latest ITA team rankings, the Oklahoma Sooners are 5-2 on the season and have won their last two heading into this Friday's meeting with Texas Tech. The Sooners picked up 6-1 wins over SMU and Kansas to close out their February schedule, which followed up ranked losses to No. 3 Texas and No. 24 Arizona State. Oklahoma is led by Carmen Corley, who is 4-2 this season in the No. 1 singles position and has picked up a pair of ranked wins on the year. Corley and her sister Ivana Corley are 6-0 at No. 1 doubles this season as well.

No. 15 Baylor heads into Sunday's match at 10-1 and winners of six in a row. In that stretch, Baylor's resume includes wins over Washington State, Washington, Texas A&M and SMU. The Bears' last loss came in a 4-0 sweep at then-No. 3 Texas at ITA Kickoff Weekend. Mel Krywoj has started the majority of matches at the No. 1 singles position for the Bears, going 7-2 on the year in dual play. Krywoj and Alicia Herrero Linana are also 7-2 this season at the No. 1 doubles line.

The Texas Tech Lady Raider tennis team opened Big 12 play in dominant fashion on Saturday afternoon, handling TCU, 6-1, at the McLeod Tennis Center.

The match began with a tight doubles point that ended up going to the Lady Raiders after wins on courts one and three. Lisa Mays and Kaitlin Staines struck first, notching a 6-3 win over Isabel Pascual and Mercedes Aristegui. After the Horned Frogs came back for a 6-4 win on court two, Olivia Peet and Metka Komac snagged the win on three, holding off Margaret Polk and Stevie Kennedy, 7-5, to put the Lady Raiders up, 1-0.

Texas Tech would get straight-set wins from five of its six singles players to quickly dispatch of the Horned Frogs, and had the match clinched at 4-0 before TCU got on the board.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Lady Raiders will return home next weekend to continue Big 12 play, beginning with a 5 p.m. match against Kansas State on March 12, followed by a doubleheader on March 14 against Kansas (12 p.m.) and Tarleton State (3:30 p.m.).
