Lady Raiders Claim First Tourney Title in Five Years at San Diego
November 30, 2019 | Women's Basketball
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball team will be taking home hardware after locking up a 64-60 win over host team San Diego to claim the San Diego Thanksgiving Tournament title on Saturday night. The win marked the program's first tournament win in five years. The victory moved Texas Tech to 5-0 for the first time in eight seasons.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Four Lady Raiders finished the game in double-figure scoring, led by senior Brittany Brewer's 16 points in the first collegiate tournament win of her career. Brewer also added nine rebounds and seven blocks on the night.
Â
Sophomore Chrislyn Carr finished with 14 points for her third-straight game of 10 or more points. Andrayah Adams hit four triples for a Texas Tech career high 12 points. Freshman Alexis Tucker scored 11 along with seven rebounds.
Â
The two teams went back and forth in the first quarter, but it was Tech that headed into the second frame with a 17-16 lead.
Â
The trading of blows continued into the second quarter, but the Lady Raiders were able to create some separation with a 12-0 scoring run over the final four minutes of the period, led by six points from junior Jo'Nah Johnson and capped off with a three at the end of the half from Adams. Tech led, 36-28, heading into the locker room.
Â
The Lady Raiders withstood a push from the Toreros coming out of the half, as San Diego outscored Texas Tech, 17-13, in the third to cut the advantage to four; however, a 5-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter created enough momentum for the Lady Raiders to keep San Diego at arm's length for the remainder of the game.
