NBL champion joins Lady Raiders for the 2026-27 season
LUBBOCK, Texas – Lady Raider head coach Krista Gerlich has officially announced the signing of Martina Anyango who will join the Lady Raider program for the 2026-27 season.
A 6-foot-4 center from Kampala, Uganda, Anyango arrives in Lubbock after a standout career with the UCU Lady Canons where she established herself as one of the premier post players in East Africa. Most recently, Anyango helped lead the Lady Canons to the 2026 National Basketball League Championship and was named the league's Playoffs Most Valuable Player after averaging a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double during the postseason.
Anyango earned multiple honors during her championship campaign, including NBL Best Center, Top Rebounder and a selection to the league's Best Five Team. She delivered several dominant performances throughout UCU's title run, including a 28-point, 16-rebound outing against the KCCA Leopards in the semifinal series and a 27-point, 11-rebound performance in the series-clinching victory that secured a berth in the championship finals.
In the title series, Anyango totaled 70 points and 73 rebounds while helping UCU secure the program's ninth national championship. She capped the championship run with a double-double in the decisive game, recording 15 points and 11 rebounds.
In addition to her success in traditional competition, Anyango has also represented UCU on the international stage. She helped the Lady Canons earn a bronze medal at the 2025 FISU 3x3 Basketball World Cup, becoming part of the first African university team to reach the semifinals and finish on the podium at the event.
The Lady Raiders officially kick off their season on Nov. 5, taking on Charlotte at the United Supermarkets Arena. Gerlich and the Lady Raiders will look to build on one of the most successful seasons in recent program history. Picked 13th in the preseason poll a year ago, Texas Tech finished fourth in the Big 12 and posted a 26-8 overall record including a 12-6 conference mark, eventually culminating in the team's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013.
