AUSTIN, Texas - It came down to the end -- point for point. But No. 36 Texas held on for a 4-2 win over No. 18 Texas Tech on Sunday at the Caswell Tennis Center.
"This was one of the toughest losses for me personally," said seventh-year head coach Todd Petty. "We had match points on Dvo (Sarah Dvorak) and KJ's (Katelyn Jackson) within seconds of each other.
"I was proud of the effort, but you have to learn how to let go of the result. This is a very young group and this loss can be helpful, if they can learn from it."
The loss drops the Lady Raiders to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 action, while Texas improves to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in Big 12 action.
With Texas leading, 3-2, The Lady Raider future was in the hands of freshmen Sarah Dvorak and Katelyn Jackson. Both had sent their matches to a third set, battling for each point and game.
Dvorak, who dropped the first set, 6-3, came back to win the second, 6-4. She went up early, 3-0, thanks to an early break. But Veda Koprcina won the next three and tied it, 3-3. The two traded service until it was 5-5. Koprcina picked up a late break and then served out the match and the win for the Longhorns, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Jackson's match was abandoned despite a valiant effort. Identically to Dvorak, she lost the first, 6-3, before winning the second, 6-4. Lana Groenvyck jumped out on Jackson in the third and led 3-1, but Jackson battled herself back into the match and took a 5-4 lead. The two traded service until it was 6-6 and a tiebreaker ensued. When the match was abandoned, Jackson was up 4-3 in the tiebreaker.
The day started with a solid showing from the Lady Raiders in doubles, as Kenna Kilgo and Gabriela Talaba rolled past Breaunna Addison and Dani Wagland, 6-1. Lynn Kiro and Sabrina Federici captured an exciting 7-5 win at No. 2 over Ryann Foster and Lina Padegimaite.
Dvorak and Jackson abandoned their match at No. 3, as the Lady Raider tandem were tied, 5-5 with Groenvynck and Pippa Horn.
No. 49 Addison tied the match after winning No. 1 over Kilgo, 6-2, 6-0. But No. 59 Kiro ousted Wagland, 6-3, 6-4 to give Texas Tech back the lead at 2-1.
Padegimaite snapped Federici's 12-match winning streak with a 6-4, 6-2 win over the freshman, tying the match 2-2. Foster then put Texas up 3-2, when Foster stopped Talaba 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2.
Texas Tech returns to action on Friday at 5 p.m., as the Lady Raiders host No. 29 Oklahoma at the McLeod Tennis Center.
