LUBBOCK, Texas - While doubles seems to be a work in progress, singles seems to be the driving force. Never was that more clear than Friday evening at the McLeod Tennis Center, as No. 23 Texas Tech rolled to a 4-1 win over #31 Oklahoma.
The win improved Texas Tech to 13-4 on the season and 3-1 in Big 12 action, while Oklahoma falls to 11-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12.
"I did not like the way doubles went today and I let them know it," said seventh-year head coach Todd Petty. "I think we responded well from criticism. The first 45 minutes of singles was the best we have played all year. We still have to play better with momentum."
After Kenna Kilgo and Gabriela Talaba ousted Emma Devine and Malene Stripp, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles, Oklahoma answered with a 6-4 win at No. 3, as Zita Engboks and Christiana Brigante topped Sarah Dvorak and Katelyn Jackson.
The point came down to the match at No. 2. Lynn Krio and Sabrina Federici battled with Lily Miyazaki and Simran Sethi, but the Oklahoma tandem edged Texas Tech, 6-4 to win the first point of the day.
Federici evened the match, 1-1, when the Lady Raider freshman throttled Brigante, 6-0, 6-0. Talaba was close behind with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sethi.
Katelyn Jackson improved to 19-8 on the season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Stripp and Texas Tech led 3-1.
No. 90 Dvorak closed out the win with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Melrose. Dvorak also won her 19th match of the season.
The Lady Raiders are now 49-17 (74.2 percent) in singles play this spring. The 74.2 percent is the highest winning percentage in school history.
Texas Tech will now face No. 11 Oklahoma State on Sunday at noon at the McLeod Tennis Center. The Cowgirls topped Texas Tech, 4-2, in the season opener as a part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Atlanta, Ga. Oklahoma State (15-3, 2-1 Big 12) topped #20 TCU, 4-2, in Fort Worth on Friday.
