WACO, Texas -- The 2001 regular season campaign has come to a close and the Texas Tech women's tennis team will travel to Waco, Texas, to compete in the Big 12 Tournament tomorrow against eighth-seeded Colorado. The Red Raiders are the ninth seed with a 9-10 overall record and 3-8 in the Big 12.
Tech is 3-2 in the month of April and riding a one-match-winning-streak into the Big 12 Tournament. On neutral sites this year women's tennis are 4-0 on neutral sites.
This will be the second tournament under the helm of head coach Virginia Brown. Last year Tech was knocked out of the conference tournament in the first round against Nebraska, 5-0. Coach Brown has done wonders by turning her squad around and winning more than twice the amount of wins then all of last year.
"I have been very pleased with our team's performance this year," said Brown. "We worked hard throughout the fall and this spring and it has shown in many of our matches. If we put everything together we have a chance in upsetting some very good conference opponents."
Freshman Irina Tereschenko leads the team by posting a 12-5 overall record and 4-5 in league play. She has been ranked nationally in ITA rankings for six straight weeks earning her highest ranking of 46th in the nation. She currently is ranked 56th in the ITA.
In doubles action Tereschenko and sophomore Beverly Dawson have teamed-up throughout the 2001 campaign in the No. 1 position. The duo is posting an intimidating 14-3 overall record and 6-3 in conference action. The combo ended the regular season on a three-match win streak. Earlier in the year the two handed Colorado's Grauebig and Sall an 8-2 loss in the No. 1 position.
The winner of Tech/Colorado will compete on Friday, April 27, against No. 1 seeded Texas at 8:30 a.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
