LUBBOCK, Texas- The Texas Tech women's tennis played their home opener today, hosting Abilene Christian at Natalius. The Red Raiders defeated the Wildcats 6-1, improving their record to 4-0 on the year and dropping ACU's record to 3-1.
"We played very hard. Last year was my first year at Tech and we lost to them. I felt I owed them one," said head coach Virginia Brown.
With their fourth win on the year, the Red Raiders continue with their best record in 14 years. Tech now leads the all-time series 21-2. The two losses came in 1996 and 2000.
Senior co-captain Alenka Ovin improved her 2001 record to 4-0 with a win over 27th-ranked Division Two player Sarah Taweel in two-sets, 6-0, 6-2. Sonnia Orellana continued her winning ways, but ended her scoreless streak by winning in two-sets 6-3, 6-0, over Andi Wildner in the fourth position. Junior co-captain Noel Ruiz defeated Velvet Canada in two-sets 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles action the Red Raiders were just as successful, winning all three matches.
