LUBBOCK, Texas- The Texas Tech women's tennis team opened Big 12 play today with a victory over Missouri, 4-3. The Red Raiders have their best start at 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play in fourteen years. Missouri drops to 6-2 with the loss.
The Tigers entered the weekend undefeated, but fell to Baylor on Saturday, 7-0. Missouri continues on the road Feb. 16, at Oral Roberts.
With the win Tech has their first ever victory in a Big 12 opening conference match. The last time the Red Raiders won their first conference match was in 1994 against TCU.
Sophomore transfer Barbara Schraml stepped into the No. 1 position and defeated Jessica Ferguson in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Irina Tereschenko played at the No. 2 position and beat Urska Juric in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
Tech won the doubles point by winning in the No. 2 and 3 position. In the No. 2 position Beverly Dawson and Tereschenko won 8-0 defeating Kristina Olshanskuya and Marina Zelenovic.
The Red Raiders will put their undefeated record on the line next weekend when they battle the University of Texas on Sat., Feb. 10, in Lubbock.
