Women's Tennis To Compete in ITA Regional

The Texas Tech women's squad will travel to College Station this weekend to compete in the final tournament of the fall. Texas A&M University will be hosting the 2000 ITA Regional Tournament at the A&M Varsity Tennis Center and the Omar Smith Tennis Center from Fri., Nov. 3 to Mon., Nov. 6.
The tournament will consist of the main singles draw of 128. A consolation draw of 64 will begin following the round of 128 and a second round consolation will begin following the main round of 64. There will also be a doubles draw of 64 with a first round consolation.
The tournament will have at least one representative from 28 schools. All four Big 12 schools in Texas will be participating in the tournament. Tech will have six representatives in singles and three teams in doubles.
In singles action, the Red Raiders have two No. 17 seeds for the tournament, senior Alenka Ovin and transfer Barbara Schraml. Schraml, 6-3 for the fall, has beaten Big 12 opponent Frida Borjesson of Baylor who will be competing in the tournament. Sonnia Orellana will make the trip and looks to extend her 7-3 record. Kendall Brooks, Beverly Dawson, and co-captain Noel Ruiz will also be competing in singles action.
In doubles, Ovin and Schraml will team-up for the third time this fall. Brooks and Dawson will look for their third straight victory as they head into the weekend 2-0. The final group for the Red Raiders will be Ruiz and Orellana who post a 3-3 record.
At stake in the tournament are spots in the third leg of the ITA Grand Slam. The singles champion and finalists, along with the double champion, will advance to the 2000 Rolex National Indoor Championships in February in Dallas.
