No. 23 Tech welcomes UNM for Thursday exhibition

The contest will be the Red Raiders lone tune up before the season opener at Hawaii
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 23 Texas Tech Soccer kicks off its 2026 campaign and the 2026-27 Tech Athletics calendar year on Thursday night against New Mexico.
First touch from the John Walker Soccer Complex is set for 7 p.m. The match is open to the public and features free admission.
No stream or live stats will be available for the Thursday scrimmage, but a full recap and box score will be posted to Texas-Tech-Dot-Com. Fans wishing to following the match can follow Texas Tech Soccer on its various social media profiles.
The Red Raiders and Lobos will meet for the first time since the 2023 season when Tech and UNM battled to a 1-1 draw on opening night of the 2023 season in Albuquerque.
Fresh off a successful 2025 season that saw the program reach double-digit wins for the third-straight season and for the fourth-time in five season, Tech enters the 2026 campaign ranked inside the preseason United Soccer Coaches Poll for the second time in the last three seasons.
The Red Raiders return an exciting core in 2026 that includes a trio of All-Big 12 Preseason honorees in Kylie Bahr, Eleanor Hayes and Taylor Zdrojewski. Also back this season for Tech is All-Big 12 Freshman Team honorees Raleigh Greason and Emma Torres. As a squad the Red Raiders were picked fifth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll receiving 180 total points and one first place vote.
Tech's returning core was also bolstered through both the high school and portal ranks, as Tech brought in three Power Four transfers this offseason including two-time national champion Addie Todd from Florida State, BYU transfer Abbi Sine and Penn State transfer Emma Fassora.
Todd, who won the 2023 and 2025 NCAA College Cup with the Seminoles arrives at Tech with 30 career starts and 21 career wins and 11 all-time clean sheets. Todd was a 2024 All-ACC Tournament honoree after making a pair of PK saves in FSUs ACC Tournament Semifinals win over No. 3 Wake Forest and made four saves in the title game win over No. 8 UNC.
Also included in the batch of newcomers are a pair of top-100 recruits in center back Reese Liner and midfielder Lauren Alvarez as well as two-time Class 6A State Champion Madi Patterson. Tech's 2026 class was ranked No. 14 in the country by PrepSoccer.

SCOUTING THE LOBOS:
New Mexico enters its first season under the guidance of new head coach Karley Nelson. Nelson was named the head coach of the Lobos back on Nov. 12, 2025, after longtime head coach Hather Dyche left for a job with US Soccer. Nelson was a long-time assistant of Dyche's, spending the last six seasons as the Lobos associate head coach.
New Mexico was picked to finish third in the Preseason Mountain West Coaches poll and received a pair of first place votes. The Lobos trailed just Wyoming and preseason favorite Air Force.
In total three UNM Lobos were named to the Preseason All-MW Watchlist as forward Fiona Jenkins, Nicole Anderson and Alysa Whelchel were all represented.
A 2025 Second Team All-Mountain West selection, Anderson started 18 matches in 2025 tallying eight goals and three assists. She tied for the team lead in goals overall and led the Lobos with four Mountain West goals.
The Lobos second All-MW preseason performer, Whelchel also boasts over 50 career appearances, as the California native started all 19 matches in 2025 and scored six times.
As a team, UNM returns 21 players from a season ago and added eight newcomers.
