Red Raiders fall 10-2 in game two
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech dropped game two of the Gainesville Super Regional to No. 6 Florida (52-11) on Saturday afternoon. The Gators won 10-2 against the Red Raiders (56-7) after a big fifth inning broke open the game.
Florida's Jocelyn Erickson and Kenleigh Cahalan caused problems on offense, combining for six hits and five RBI. Jasmyn Burns and Lagi Quiroga recorded the two RBI for the Red Raiders, Burns on a sac fly in the third and Quiroga on a fielder's choice in the fourth. Mihyia Davis was the only Red Raider to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Mia Williams reached base three times, two on a hit by pitch, as Lauren Allred had the only extra-base hit for Tech on a double.
NiJaree Canady got the start for the Red Raiders and went 3.2 innings allowing five hits, five runs while striking out five batters as her record dropped to 24-6. Samantha Lincoln threw the final 3.1 innings of the game. Florida's Keagan Rothrock had a bounce back performance, throwing all 7.0 innings, allowing six hits and striking out five as she improved to 30-6.
How it Happened:
The Gators were in attack mode early, drawing a leadoff walk and then hitting a two-run homer to give them an early 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish. After the first two batters, Canady did bounce back quickly and record three straight strikeouts. Florida added one more run in the third that was answered back on Burns' sac-fly but opened up the game with a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 5-1.
The Red Raiders had a chance to have a big inning of their own after Quiroga reached and drove in a run on fielder's choice to make it 5-2. Mia Williams was hit by another pitch, the fourth time in two games, to load the bases as Burns missed a grand slam by a matter of a few feet.
Florida added four more runs to make it 9-2 and effectively clinch the game two win as Tech's offense was not able to get anything else going.
UP NEXT: Tech will face No. 6 Florida again tomorrow, time and network are still to be determined.
