The Red Raiders fell despite leading 2-0 and 6-3
LUBBOCK, Texas – Up 2-0 after two and 6-3 heading to the seventh, Texas Tech Baseball fell to Oklahoma State 9-8 Saturday afternoon to Oklahoma State at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Down 9-8 heading to the ninth, Texas Tech (22-21, 6-14 Big 12) placed the first two runners on base on a lead-off single from catcher Matt Quintanar and a walk by first baseman Robin Villeneuve.
With Quintanar at second and Villeneuve at first, the Red Raiders attempted to bunt with shortstop Coleman Ryan, but the infielder fouled off a 1-2 bunt attempt for the innings first out.
Tech's next batter, centerfielder Kyeler Thompson even in the count (2-2) ripped a two hopper deep into the hole at short that Oklahoma State's (27-16, 10-10) Brock Thompson was able to pick cleanly on a dive to his right.
Thompson went 2-for-5 on Saturday afternoon and hit his first home run of the season a 430-foot blast to left center. Â
With a force at all three bases, OSUs Thompson popped up and fired a perfect throw to teammate Aidan Meola who stepped on the third base bag ahead of a sliding Quintanar for the second out of the inning.
On the slide, Quintanar made contact with Meola and was deemed to have made an illegal slide and thus was called for interreference which ended the game.
In the setback, Tech reliever Logan Addison took the tough luck loss, as after tossing 2.1 scoreless and retiring six of his first seven batters faced (five via strikeout), Addison ultimately allowed four runs on a solo home run Alex Conover and a two-run double from OSU catcher Campbell Smithwick that tied the game at 6-6.
The final run charged to Addison came around to score on a go-ahead double from Colin Brueggemann off Tech reliever Logan Bevis.
With the game scoreless heading to the bottom of the second, Tech placed its first runs of the game on the board on a two-run double from Tracer Lopez. The double for Lopez was a team-best 17th double of the season and scored Quintanar and Villeneuve.
Armed with a 2-0 lead, Texas Tech starter Jackson Burns lost back-to-back full-count battles with the bottom of the order to put the tying runs on base with nobody out.
After a strikeout put the inning's first out on the board, OSU used three-straight RBI hits to take a 3-2 lead, before Burns ended the threat with a 6-4-3 double play ball.
The game remained 3-2 OSU until the bottom of the fifth, when Tech tied the game on a lead-off double from Logan Hughes, a sac-bunt and a productive out from Caden Ferraro.
Tied for the first time all day, the Red Raiders took retook the lead on the home run from Thompson before using a single from Lopez and a walk from Jace Souza to put two more runners on.
After a strikeout put the inning's second out on the board, the Red Raiders used a clutch two-run hit off the batter eyes in center field to take a 6-3 lead. On the play, Garcia was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.
Pitching with the lead for the first time, Addison struck out the inning's first batter before OSU got the home run from Conover to pull to within 6-4.
Following another strike out by Addison, OSU placed the tying runs on base on a Kollin Ritchie triple off the batters eye just inches from where Garcia's ball struck and a walk by Meola.
The Cowboys ultimately tied the game at 6-6 on the two-run double from Campbell Smithwick.
Turning to Bevis with two out and the go-ahead run in scoring position, the Red Raiders allowed the go-ahead double to Brueggemann that gave OSU a 7-6 lead.
With the game still 7-6 OSU heading to the eighth, OSU used a one-out double from Conver and a two-out, two-run home run from Ritchie to take a 9-6 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Red Raiders again placed the first two batters of the frame on base using a lead-off double from Ryan and a walk to Thompson to bring the tying run to the plate.
Turning to lefty Hudson Barrett, OSU put the first out on the board when they struck out Lopez.
Still with the tying run at the plate, the Red Raiders used a single down the third base line from Souza and a 110 MPH single through the shift on the left side from Logan Hughes to pull to within 9-8.
With one out and runners on first and second, Barrett used a flyout and a popup to short to strand the runners on base and keep OSU in the lead.
In the ninth, the Red Raiders got a quick 12 pitch, 1-2-3 inning from Jorden Espinoza to keep the game 9-8 heading into the home half of the ninth.
Again facing Barett, the Red Raiders used the single from Quintanar and the four-pitch walk to put the tying run in scoring position and the winning run at first , but Barrett used the fouled bunt strikeout and the grounder turned interference to hold on for a 9-8 win and the series victory.
In the setback, Lopez went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Hughes also went 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Lopez's three hits Saturday brings his career total to 226 and pulls him to within two hits of Taylor Ashby for sixth on the all-time hits list.
