Tech drops series opener to OSU

The Red Raiders got three hits and two RBIs each from Logan Hughes and Robin Villeneuve
Down 1-0 early, Hughes tied the game at one-all in the first for Texas Tech (22-20, 6-13 Big 12) ripping a two-out double off the top of the wall that scored Connor Shouse from first. The ball nearly cleared the wall for his 12th home run of the season.
With the score still 1-1 heading to the second, Oklahoma State (26-16, 9-10 Big 12) used a two-run second and a nine-run third to cruise to victory.
The Red Raiders pulled to within 12-4 after three, but could only manage singular runs in the fourth and seventh in the set back.
In a 13-5 game, OSU used an RBI single from Aidan Meloa and a two-run double from catcher Campbell Smithwick to take a 16-5 lead into the home-half of the seventh.
Meola went 4-for-5 on Friday afternoon and drove in six including four on a third-inning grand slam against Tech reliever Connor Mohan. Mohan who pitched just two-thirds of an inning
was tagged for six hits and nine runs.
Needing two runs to extend the game, Tech used an RBI single from Villeneuve to pull to within 16-6, but OSUs Kai Fyke used a fielders choice and a strike out to close out the run-rue win for the Cowboys.
In the set back, Tech senior Jonny Lowe was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in two innings pitched.
The Red Raiders did get strong relief work from sophomore Brady Trombello and Jake Spinder who combined to toss 3.1 innings of one-hit, one-run ball.
Trombello pitched 2.1 of those innings and allowed just one hit and struck out three, while Spindler whiffed two in a perfect 1-2-3 inning.
On the flip side, OSUs starter Ethan Lund tossed six innings and allowed 10 hits and five runs (all earned). He walked four and struck out four over his 111-pitch outing.
