Texas Tech will head to Houston for opening Big 12 series
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 2 Texas Tech (22-1) will open Big 12 this weekend against Houston (15-7) beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Cougar Softball Stadium. The other two games of the series are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday but subject to change due to potential weather.
The Red Raiders are 8-6 all-time against the Cougars and won all three games of the series last year in Lubbock. Gerry Glasco has yet to lose a conference series, dating back to his time at Louisiana, and will look to continue that streak this weekend.
Previously on Texas Tech Softball:
The Red Raiders home opening weekend was one for the record books. Tech averaged over 1,600 fans each game while tying the record for runs in a game (24) twice and breaking the record for hits (24), home runs (8) and RBI (24) in a game. Tech also threw the first consecutive no-hitters in program history thanks to Terry and Canady.
Gerry Glasco has used 22 different lineups through 23 different games this season. Glasco had 57 different lineups in 68 games last year, so this isn't anything new for Texas Tech fans. With the talent on the roster, Glasco is looking for different ways to incorporate all the skillsets of the team.
Kaitlyn "KT" Terry has been arguably the team's best player through the first 23 games of the season. She was named Big 12 Player of the Week this past week after batting over .750 with 19 total bases and going 3-0 in the circle with a 1.31 ERA and throwing her second no-hitter of the season.
NiJaree Canady is getting closer to being back to form. The senior star missed most of fall practice and did not really throw in the summer which attributed to her "slow" (slow by her standards) start. But after allowing 1 hit through 10.0 innings and striking out 13 batters in a no-hit performance, Canady was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and is getting closer to being the pitcher we all saw in May and June.
The offense has been on fire. Tech is top 5 in the country in batting average (.412), doubles (53), hits (235), homers (45), on-base percentage (.499), RBI (225), scoring (10.43 runs per game), slugging (.765), runs (240) and stolen bases (60).
