No. 13 Tech earns road win at WVU

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia – No. 13 Texas Tech made 13 3-pointers and limited West Virginia to only two in a game it never trailed and won 70-63 on Sunday at Hope Coliseum. JT Toppin led the Red Raiders (17-6, 7-3 Big 12) with 22 points and nine rebounds while Christian Anderson recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 assists. Tech finished the game shooting 13-for-24 (54.2%) on 3-pointers and limited the Mountaineers (15-9, 6-5 Big 12) to 2-of-22 (9.1%) from beyond the arc.
Donovan Atwell hit Tech's first two 3-pointers and finished the game shooting 4-for-5 on 3s and had 15 points and three rebounds. Jaylen Petty scored 11 points after shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc and Anderson was 3-for-7. Toppin added two 3s, shooting 2-for-4 on 3s, and was 8-for-17 from the field. Luke Bamgboye added three blocks, five rebounds and two points while LeJuan Watts had seven points, four rebounds and two assists. The Red Raiders finished the game with 17 assists on 23-for-48 (47.9%) shooting from the field. Anderson and Atwell both played all 40 minutes and Toppin played all but three.
Tech's 54.2% shooting on 3-pointers was its second best of the season and only behind shooting 17-for-29 (63.0%) at Baylor. The Red Raiders have now made 10 or more 3-pointers in eight straight games and in 18 of 23 games this season. Tech, which is now 3-2 on the road in conference play, leads the Big 12 by making 11.5 3-pointers per game and is now shooting 39.1% from beyond the arc for the season. The Red Raiders are now 3-0 against the Mountaineers under head coach Grant McCasland and trimmed into WVU's 18-12 lead in the all-time series.
Brenan Lorient led WVU with 21 points after shooting 10-for-14 from the field while Jasper Floyd and Chance Moore each had 10 points. The Mountaineers had a 34-28 rebounding advantage and outscored the Red Raiders by a 38-20 margin in the paint but could never overcome the 3-point discrepancy.
Leading 39-27 at halftime, West Virginia started the second half on an 8-0 run before a Petty 3-pointer stopped the run before an Atwell 3 had Tech leading 45-37. Toppin's first 3-pointer put the Red Raiders back up by double digits and a pair of free throws by Anderson gave Tech a 10-0 run and a 52-37 lead. Tech remained in control throughout, withstanding a late push by WVU with Anderson making his third 3 for a 66-56 lead.
Texas Tech took a 39-27 lead into halftime after going 8-for-11 on 3-pointers in the first half while WVU was only 2-of-14 from deep. Atwell led the Red Raiders with 12 points, going 3-for-3 on 3-pointers and also making 3-of-3 free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt. Toppin went into the break with nine points and five rebounds while Anderson had eight points and seven assists. Watts added five points, three rebounds and two assists to the 12-point halftime lead. Tech scored its first 12 points of the game on 3-pointers with Atwell making the first two before Watts and Anderson hit one each for a 12-5 lead. A Toppin dunk stopped the streak of 3s but gave the Red Raiders a 14-9 lead. Anderson was 2-for-4 on 3-pointers in the first half, making his second for a 22-13 lead while Petty made one in the first half, connecting to give the Red Raiders a 35-23 lead. Moore was leading the Mountaineers with nine points while Lorient had eight points. Tech went into the break shooting 61% from the floor and was limiting WVU to 41%. Tech also had a 17-11 rebounding advantage and nine assists on 14 makes.
The Red Raiders return home to host Colorado at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at United Supermarkets Arena before a two-game road trip that has them playing No. 1 Arizona on Saturday in Tucson and Arizona State on Tuesday, February 17 in Tempe. The Red Raiders earned a 73-71 win over Colorado in the first matchup between the two teams on January 10 in Boulder and will enter the game with an 11-1 home record. The Buffaloes travel to Lubbock with a 14-10 overall record and are 4-7 in Big 12 play after a 78-70 win over Arizona State on Saturday at home.
