No. 18 Lady Raiders head to Houston

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 18 Texas Tech Lady Raiders head south to take on the Houston Cougars this Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Fertitta Center. Texas Tech (21-3, 8-3 Big 12) leads the all-time series against the Cougars, 45-14, winning 27 of the last 29 meetings. The Lady Raiders are on a six-game winning streak against Houston, winning their last matchup on Jan. 13 in Lubbock by a 71-59 score.
With the win over No. 12 TCU on Feb. 1, Texas Tech got its first win in the month of February since Feb. 22, 2023 when the Lady Raiders defeated West Virginia by a 69-68 score in double overtime that year. This win marked the Lady Raiders' second top-15 victory this year. In addition, the last time the Scarlet & Black totaled at least eight wins in Big 12 play was in the 2012-13 season.
Senior Snudda Collins earned her first Big 12 Player of the Week honor this past week and third Big 12 weekly award of the season after propelling Tech to a win over TCU. Collins had another career performance, this time against the Horned Frogs, posting her second game in the last three contests with 28 points, tying her career high. She shot 9-for-20 from the field (.450) and 3-for-6 from behind the arc (.500) to lead the way for the Lady Raiders. In addition, Collins added five rebounds and seven free throws in the win. The Brookhaven, Miss., native now ties for the team lead with 21 double-digit scoring games and leads the way with four 20+ point games. She leads the team with 15.5 points per game.
In Tech's 11 Big 12 games so far, the team is led by Collins with 17.3 points per game, followed by Bailey Maupin with 15.1 and Jalynn Bristow with 8.3. On the rebounding side, Bristow leads the way with 5.5 per game, followed by Gemma Núñez with 4.8 and Denae Fritz with 4.5. Fritz and Núñez lead the team with 28 and 17 steals in conference play, respectively. Collins and Maupin both tally a team-leading 22 threes as Collins leads with a 43.1 percent three-point percentage between the two players. Fritz is just behind with 19 made 3-pointers on 43.2 percent shooting from behind the arc. In addition, Núñez leads the Lady Raiders with 53 assists and Jada Malone leads the team with 20 offensive rebounds.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Houston Cougars are 7-15 overall and 1-10 in Big 12 play. They have key wins over UTSA, Tulsa and Cincinnati. Some recent losses came against TCU, Baylor, Kansas State and Utah. The Cougars are averaging 61.0 points per game and allowing 71.7 points per game. Shooting 37.5 percent from the field, Houston also averages 36.1 rebounds per game and 9.0 steals per game. The Cougars have five players averaging eight or more points per game this year in Kyndall Hunter (9.6), Kierra Merchant (9.5), Tk Pitts (8.9), Amirah Abdur-rahim (8.4) and Briana Peguero (8.0). On the rebounding side, Pitts leads the way with 6.7 per game followed by Jade Jones with 5.5.
