No. 18 Tech dominates the Houston Cougars

HOUSTON – Senior Bailey Maupin aided the No. 18 Texas Tech Lady Raiders to a win over the Houston Cougars after scoring 25 points as Tech won the game, 85-61, on Saturday evening at the Fertitta Center.
For Texas Tech (22-3, 9-3 Big 12), Maupin scored 25 points on 53.8 percent shooting from the field (7-for-13) and 5-for-9 shooting from behind the arc (.556) against Houston (7-16, 1-11 Big 12). Her five 3-pointers were a career-high as she added a team-high six rebounds with two assists and two steals. Maupin recorded her 22nd double-digit scoring game and fourth game with 20+ points this year.
Senior Gemma Núñez had herself a game, totaling a team-best of seven assists and six steals, which is also a career high in takeaways. She added 13 points and tallied her 15th game with two or more steals and 17th game with five or more assists. Junior Jalynn Bristow led the team with four blocks for her 16th game this season with 2+ blocks and third game with 5+ blocks. She scored 15 points in the game for her 14th double-figure scoring game this season, while adding five rebounds.
The Lady Raiders shot 49.1 percent from the field (28-for-57) and 44.0 percent from the three (11-for-25). Tech forced 32 Houston turnovers and scored 40 points off of those. In addition, the Lady Raiders added 19 assists and 17 steals in the game.
Houston held a 7-2 advantage to open the game, but Denae Fritz made a three to cut into the lead. Houston followed with a second-chance layup to go up 9-5, then Snudda Collins scored a turnaround jumper to make it 9-7. Sidney Love forced a steal right before the media timeout to give Tech back the ball. Out of the timeout, Maupin tied it up with two free throws, then Bristow nailed a 3-pointer. The Cougars scored a free throw to stop the Tech run, but Maupin answered with another three, sparking a 9-0 run as the Lady Raiders would lead by a 21-12 score after one.
The Cougars grabbed a steal which led to a fastbreak layup to begin the second quarter. But, Núñez responded with a layup of her own. Núñez followed that up with a steal which led to a Bristow and-one play for three points. Houston went on an 8-3 run to answer and force a Texas Tech timeout. The Lady Raiders got a three from Maupin and a layup from Jada Malone after the timeout to lead 32-22. Maupin nailed another triple, then Sarengbe Sanogo scored a layup to cap off a 10-0 run. Houston would score six of the next eight points, but Maupin made yet another three at the shotclock buzzer to give Tech a 44-28 lead heading into the half.
It was a slow scoring third quarter as the first basket wasn't scored until the 8:40 mark when Sanogo made a layup. Houston scored four of the next six points to make it 48-32, but Collins connected with three free throws to follow. Tech was held scoreless for a little over two minutes until Love forced a turnover that led to a made free throw. Núñez added a 3-pointer with 1:27 left, then Malone made four free throws at the end of the quarter to give Tech a 59-43 advantage after three.
Bristow scored a layup to open the final quarter, but the Cougs made a three in response. The Lady Raiders got two free throws from Maupin and a three from Fritz to make it a 20-point lead. Houston connected with two free throws, then Maupin made two of her own. Núñez scored a tough layup to give Tech a 70-48 advantage with 5:39 left. Houston made three free throws before Núñez scored two more. Bristow and Maupin scored 3-pointers to lead 78-55 with 2:20 left. Then, Adlee Blacklock made a corner three to extend the lead. Mariam Sanogo came in and scored a tough layup to help the Lady Raiders win, 85-61.
