Volleyball heads to Fort Worth than Houston
LUBBOCK, Texas โ Texas Tech (8-9, 0-5) will make some stops around Texas this weekend as they head to Fort Worth to take on No. 10 TCU on Friday at 6:30 p.m. followed by 1 p.m. Sunday match against Houston.
The Horned Frogs (14-3, 5-1) are 20-14 all-time against the Red Raiders as the Cougars (10-6, 3-2) also have a favorable record going 35-19 against Tech.
The Red Raiders are looking to bounce back from back-to-back sweeps in their last two outings but face a tough test in TCU who will be the first top-10 team Tech faces this season. Houston is also improved from a season ago as they have already won more conference matches this season than they did all last year.
Quick Hits:
Texas Tech's Sara Bowcutt and Elia Dinsmore have already shown flashes of brilliance in their short careers. The freshmen duo rankings first and third on the team in points, respectively. They both recorded their first career double-double against St. Thomas in the second match of the season and Bowcutt became the first Red Raider this season to record 20 kills in a match when she did so in Tech's win over St. Mary's (9/3) and recorded two more in wins over UTRGV (9/10) and Prairie View A&M (9/10).
Sophomores Kenna McKenzie and Shelby Ignash are taking the step forward that everyone hoped they would after finishing their freshmen campaigns so strongly last year. Ignash recorded a career-high eight blocks against St. Mary's and then tied her career-high for kills in back-to-back matches with nine against Sacramento State (9/4) and Nevada (9/5).
Cochran has had a career year so far, already breaking her career-high for assists three separate times including a 63-assist day against Iowa State (9/25), the first Red Raider since 2022 to record 60 assists in a match. Cochran is 6th in the Big 12 in assists per set (9.31) and her 577 total assists ranks second in the league.
Tatum Johnson has come into her own recently. Against Nevada she recorded a career-high 10 kills and tied her career high for blocks with four. She followed that up with another career performance against Tarleton going for 16 kills while hitting over .600. Johnson currently leads the team in hitting percentage at an efficient .315 clip.
