LUBBOCK, Texas โ Texas Tech (8-7, 0-3) fell to the Mountaineers (9-4, 2-1) in five sets on Friday night.
Tech had a 2-0 lead, but West Virginia was able to gut out the reverse sweep on the road behind 32 combined kills from Nina Horning and Maddy McGath. A big difference in the box score was the Mountaineers six service errors to the Red Raiders' 12. Besides that and hitting percentage, every other stat was fairly close as Tech even recorded more kills and digs than West Virginia.
The Red Raiders were led by Elia Dinsmore who had a match-high 17 kills followed closely by Kenna McKenzie's 16. Gretchen Sigman also entered double figures for kills with 12 while Shelby Ignash was the team's most efficient hitter, going for nine kills while hitting .417 and getting in on three blocks.
Katelyn Cochran quarterbacked the offense, going for 47 assists and 15 digs to mark her fourth double-double of the season while also adding three kills and a pair of blocks. Tatum Johnson was another contributor for Tech tonight, leading the team with five blocks while also getting five kills and four digs. Emily Contreras held down the back line for a team-high 18 digs as Maggie Boyd got into double digits for digs with 10.
Tech won the first two sets 25-23 and 29-27 including an impressive first-set comeback where they rallied back from down 20-15 to take the first set and stun the Mountaineers. West Virginia did not remain in shock and after going down 0-2, rebounded with a 25-21 set three win and then a dominating 25-11 set four win. West Virgina rode that set four momentum into the deciding set and were able to break away late to secure the win.
UP NEXT: Tech will head to Tucson to face Arizona on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.
