Tech drops series opener to BYU Thursday

The Red Raiders dropped the series opener despite five hits and four runs combined by Damian Bravo and Logan Hughes
PROVO, Utah – Damian Bravo homered for the second straight game and for the third time in four games while Logan Hughes singles and doubled to extend his on-base streak to 36-straight games in Texas Tech's 13-4 road loss to BYU Thursday at Miller Park.
Turning to Mac Heuer to open the series once again, the Red Raiders (19-31, 12-16 Big 12) fell behind early 2-0 and 3-1 before cutting the once two-run deficit in half at 3-2.
In a 3-2 game, Tech saw BYU (26-25, 9-19 Big 12) break the game open in the fourth with seven runs chasing both Heuer and reliever Zach Erdman from the game before the inning came to a close.
Looking to stop the bleeding, Tech turned to reliever Jonny Lowe, who tossed the best outing of his Tech career. Lowe pitched 3.1 innings and allowed just two hits and one run.
In the setback, the Red Raiders got the aforementioned homer from Bravo who went 3-of-r3 with two runs scored and a walk, as well a pair of sacrifice flies from first baseman Robin Villeuenve who drove in his 45th and 46th run of the season.
After falling below .310 for the first time since Mar. 21 against TCU last Friday night, Bravo is now 11 for his last 17 at the plate with three home runs and eight runs scored. Bravo's average has now climbed to .346 on the season as the outfielder also launched his 12th homer of the season and eighth in Big 12 play.
BYU was led by its top two hitters in the lineup Tate Gambill and Ryder Robinson. Gambill who tripled twice was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Robinson went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs.

The Red Raiders will turn to junior Tyler Boudreau on Friday night as they look to even the weekend series at one game apiece. First pitch from Provo is set for 7 p.m. (CT)/6 p.m. (MT).
