The Red Raiders saw the Cougars erase a 5-3 deficit with three in the sixth
PROVO, Utah – Damian Bravo homered and robbed a home run, but Texas Tech Baseball fell for the second-straight night to BYU at Miller Park, this time by a score of 6-5.
Enjoying leads of 2-0, 3-2, 4-2 and 5-3, Texas Tech (19-32, 12-17 Big 12) had the ball in the hands of its best pitcher, Jack Cebert with the lead, before the Red Raiders saw BYU (27-25, 10-19 Big 12) score four times in the fifth and sixth to take control of the contest.
In the setback, Tech got another good start from Tyler Boudreau, as Boudreau went 4.0 innings and allowed just two-first inning runs. He struck out six batters, marking the fourth time in his last six starts that he struck out at least six. He departed with a 4-2 lead after striking out the side in a scoreless fourth.
Armed with a 2-0 lead after a two-run home run from Bravo, the Red Raiders saw BYU answer with a pair of two-out RBI singles to tie the game at two.
In the second, the Red Raiders answered with a two-out run, when Logan Hughes scored Kyeler Thompson who tripled one batter before.
Hughes' single extended his on-base streak to 37-straight single and brough his season RBI total to 58.
In the bottom of the second, Bravo made the run stand up when he robbed BYUs Crew McChensey of a lead-off home run. Bravo went over the wall and brought back the baseball for another highlight reel catch.
The game remained 3-2 Tech until the top of the fifth when Robin Villeneuve doubled, got to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac-fly from Antonelli Savattere.
Snapping a brief 0-for-13 streak, Savattere tied his career-high in hits on Friday, going 3-for-4 with the RBI on the sac-fly.
On top by a pair for the first time since the first, Tech turned to Cebert, who allowed a solo home run to Cooper Vest. The blast cut the Tech lead to 4-3.
In the sixth, Tech manufactured its final run of the night when the first two Red Raiders reached on a walk and a single. With runners on first and second and no outs, the Red Raiders scored on a throwing error.
Again up by two runs, Cebert allowed a lead-off single before recording the first out of the sixth. After a stolen base placed a Cougar in scoring position with less than two outs, BYU used a fielding error on a grounder to short and a go-ahead two-RBI single from Ryder Robinson to take the 6-5 lead.
Entering the day a perfect 7-0 in Big 12 play, Cebert suffered his first conference loss of the season, as the righty allowed four runs (three earned) in three innings of work.
In the eighth, Tech nearly tied the game at six-all, when with Coleman Ryan on second and two outs, Thompson ripped a ball deep into the left-center field gap that McChesney made a diving superman catch on to end the frame and the Tech threat.
After a scoreless eighth from Lukas Pirko, the Red Raiders got a lead-off single from Hughes before BYUs Ashton Johnson retired the next three Red Raiders in order on two flyouts and a liner to short. Johnson tossed 3.1 innings and allowed just three hits.
