Texas Tech places third in regular-season finale
April 15, 2025 | Men's Golf
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Texas Tech men's golf team finished in third place, among a field of 18, at the Mountaineer Invitational on Tuesday at Pete Dye Golf Club. Teams battled difficult weather conditions to complete the event over the two days of competition, beginning with Monday's second round being halted due to lightning and resuming early on Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. EDT. Play was also suspended briefly during Tuesday's action due to more storms that impacted the area.
Tough conditions led to overwhelmingly high scores by the 18 teams in action, including the Red Raiders, who carded a season-high 34-over-par (898) en route to their third-place finish. The second round was closed out on Tuesday by the 18 teams with a collective 77.85 scoring average, while the final round had a 79.26 scoring average among the 100 Mountaineer Invitational golfers.
Despite the elements, freshman Connor Graham continued the same strong play that's powered him through the spring. He earned his first career Top 10 finish on Tuesday, and his fifth Top 20 finish in seven spring events, by placing tied for seventh at 5-over-par (221) in the 54-hole tournament. He carded a second round 3-over-par 75, and again shot 3-over-par 75 in the final round, aided by a team-leading seventh eagle of the 2024-25 season on the 504-yard Par 5, on hole No. 8, after an opening round 1-under-par 71.
Tim Wiedemeyer had one of the better final rounds scored by the field, posting one of five rounds carded even-par or better by the entire Mountaineer Invitational field with an even-par 72. He made the third-highest jump on the leaderboard from the second to third round, vaulting 32 spots and into 26th place to finish the event.
Just inside the Top 25, included Calum Scott and Charlie DeLong, who each tied for 21st place at 11-over-par (228). DeLong shot one of the Red Raiders' two under-par rounds, joining Graham, with a second round 1-under-par 71 and followed with a final round 5-over-par 77. Scott was 1-over-par (145) after the first 36 holes, but a final round 10-over-par 82 dropped him out of the Top 10.
Texas Tech will return to action next Tuesday for two of the first four rounds at the 2025 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship. It will be a three-day event, April 22-24, featuring 72 holes of golf at Tulsa, Oklahoma's Southern Hills Golf Club. Teams will play 36 holes on the first day and 18 holes per day over the ensuing two days.
