February 07, 2025 | Men's Tennis
WICHITA, Kan. – Thanks to a huge doubles point and two come-from-behind singles victories, the Texas Tech Red Raiders won a thriller against the Wichita State Shockers, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at Genesis Rock Road.
Texas Tech (4-3) won what would become a crucial doubles point over the Shockers (2-3) after claiming matches at courts one and three. The Texas Tech duo of Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak totaled their sixth win on the season in dominant fashion after taking down a previously undefeated pair at court one for the Shockers, Alejandro Jacome and Kristof Minarik, by a 6-1 score.
At court two, Tyler Stewart and Ludovico Vaccari fell in a close match to Vanja Hodzic and Amir Milushev, 6-4. It all came down to court three in what was a back-and-forth affair between Tech's Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri and Wichita State's Luke Bracks and Ilias Worthington. The two teams tied the match at 5-5 before the Red Raider tandem broke and held serve to close it out with a 7-5 win to clinch the point.
The Red Raiders were able to take a 2-0 lead after getting a straight-set win at court six. Abboud, who was taking on Milushev, only dropped three games en route to a 6-2, 6-1 win. The Shockers would respond back by winning three-consecutive matches at courts two, three and five for a 3-2 advantage.
Needing to win out the remaining two singles contests, the Red Raiders surmounted two comebacks to take the match over Wichita State. Over at court four, Vaccari and Bracks were battling it out. Vaccari fell by a 6-3 score in the first set, then jumped out to a 5-2 lead in set two. Bracks came back to make it 5-4 before Vaccari claimed the next game for a 6-4 set win. In the third, the Shocker was ahead, 4-1, but the Red Raider won the next five games to tie the overall match at 3-all with a 6-4 score.
It all came down to the top court where Pawlak and Hodzic played to three sets. Pawlak and Hodzic tied the first set up, 4-4, before the Poland native was able to claim the next two games for the 6-4 set win. Hodzic evened the match when he won the next set by a 6-3 score. Pawlak went down 4-2 in the final set, but never stopped fighting. The Red Raiders ended up tying the match at 5-5, then held and broke serve to clinch the victory for Texas Tech with a 7-5 third set score.
Up next, the Red Raiders travel to San Antonio for a match against the UTSA Roadrunners on Friday, February 14 at 1 p.m.
