Murphy reaches semifinals of ITA Texas Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas – Senior Hailey Murphy reached the singles semifinals at the ITA Texas Regionals this week, just the third player in program history to do so, as the Lady Raiders concluded play at the tournament on Monday afternoon.
Regionals began with the qualifying singles draw where sophomore Elena Daskalova started out against UTSA's Giuliana Giardina. Daskalova would fall in a hard-fought battle but bounced back as she picked up a win in the consolation draw against Antonella Villarreal of SFA, 6-4, 6-4.
In the main draw of singles, both Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Murphy earned first and second round wins. Dmitrichenko, who was a 4-seed and ranked No. 76 in the ITA rankings, took down SFA's Felicia Back, 6-4, 6-1, before defeating Texas A&M's Anna Perelman in the following round, 6-4, 6-3. She made it to the Round of 16 before falling in a three-set fight to Rice's Nithesa Selvaraj.
Nine-seeded Murphy's first round victory came against UT Arlington's Sofia Selle, 6-3, 6-2, before she advanced to the Round of 32 with a 6-4, 7-5 win over North Texas' Carolina Laydner. She then took down 6-seeded and No. 99-ranked Divna Ratkovic of Rice in dominant fashion, 6-0, 6-2, in the Round of 16 to move on in the draw.
In the quarterfinals, she had a comeback against host team's Yu-Chin Tsai of TCU with a 6-7 (2), 7-6 (0), 6-2 win to become just the third player to advance to the semifinals at regionals. Former Lady Raiders Francesca Sella (2018) and Gabriela Talaba (2016) were the only players to reach the semifinals before Murphy. In the semifinals, Murphy battled against 8-seeded and No. 120-ranked Darya Schwartzman of Rice, but dropped the match to the Owl, ending her run at regionals.
Three Lady Raiders recorded singles wins of the main draw consolation. Kseniia Logvin defeated UTSA's Valeria Sanchez, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (3), as well as Tarleton's Duru Kuscu, 7-5, 6-0. Arina Oreshchenkova added wins over Sam Houston's Anamarie Kurtsikashvili, 6-4, 6-1, and Rice's Daniela Chica, 6-2, 6-2. Ella Brownback rounded out the singles wins with a victory over UTSA's Aoka Nagasawa, 6-2, 6-2.
In the main draw of doubles, 3-seeded Mariia Hlahola and Murphy advanced the furthest of any Texas Tech duo as they reached the quarterfinals with a couple of wins. In Round of 32, they overtook the Texas State pairing of Emily Niers and Ireland Simme, 8-2. In the next round, the Lady Raiders beat SFA's Back and Sonja Rooth by an 8-5 score. In the quarterfinals, Hlahola and Murphy fought valiantly against 5-seeded tandem of Tsai and Victoria Gomez O'Hayon of TCU before falling by an 8-7 (11) score.
A new fall pairing for the Lady Raiders emerged as 9-seeded Dmitrichenko and Logvin came together and added a win to their resume. In the Round of 32, they took down North Texas' Marina Adati and Pia Petelinsek without giving up a game, 8-0. They battled in the Round of 16 against the 2-seeded and No. 38-ranked pair of Mia Kupres and Daria Smetannikov of Texas A&M, falling by a score of 8-7 (6).
Brownback and Daskalova got a first-round win after the Texas pair of Mathilde Ngijol Carre and Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo withdrew due to injury. They then earned a gritty, 8-7 (5) victory over the 7-seeded duo out of North Texas, Lou Chalard and Lilly Schultz. They would fall in the Round of 16 to Texas A&M's Perelman and Violeta Martinez, 8-5.
Up next, the Lady Raiders are back in Fort Worth, Texas for the TCU Invitational on Oct. 23-26.
