January 26, 2025 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK – Texas Tech extended a four-game winning streak with a 64-54 win over Oklahoma State in a game where it built out a 10-point halftime lead, forced 22 turnovers and staved off a second-half rally on Sunday at United Supermarkets Arena.
The Red Raiders (15-4, 6-2 Big 12) led by as many as 18 points in the second half before seeing the Cowboys (10-9, 2-6 Big 12) go on a 16-1 run to close to within three. Chance McMillian ended the run and sparked momentum with a mid-range jump shot for a 54-49 lead before a Kevin Overton 3-pointer pushed Tech's lead to 59-51 to hold off OSU and improve to 10-2 at home this season. Tech has now won by double figures in three straight games and 11 this season.
"We have to find ways to come away with the win and we did that," McMillian said. "We're definitely confident in figuring out a way."
Texas Tech will now host TCU (10-9, 3-5 Big 12) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday before playing at No. 7 Houston (16-3, 8-0 Big 12) at 5 p.m. on Saturday in the Fertitta Center. The Red Raiders have now run off wins over Kansas State, Arizona, Cincinnati and Oklahoma State with three of the four victories coming by holding their opponents under 60 points after also limiting Arizona to only 54 points in their last home win.
"For the most part, our defense was good," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "We made it difficult and forced 22 turnovers. We just didn't play well and a lot of that had to do with Oklahoma State and their activity level and how they turn people over. We were in for it today, but did find a way to win."
McMillian led Tech with 14 points against Oklahoma State after going 3-for-6 on 3-pointers and also came up with six rebounds. Darrion Williams and Christian Anderson added nine points each while Federiko Federiko led the team with eight rebounds and three blocked shots along with contributing eight points. JT Toppin scored eight points, Kerwin Walton was 2-for-3 on 3-pointers and finished with six points and Overton had seven points, three rebounds and two assists. Elijah Hawkins dished out a team-high five assists and also had two steals for the Red Raiders who had 10 steals in the game. Williams led Tech with three steals and also had two assists. McMillian has now led the team in scoring in four games this season and is 45-for-95 (47.4 percent) from 3-point range.
Tech finished the game shooting 22-for-50 (44.0 percent) from the field, 8-for-26 on 3-pointers and was 12-for-21 at the free-throw line. The Red Raiders did not attempt a free throw in the first half and was only 1-for-9 on 3s in the second half. Despite going cold offensively in the second half, Tech maintained its 10-point halftime lead in a game where Oklahoma State was limited to just 3-for-13 from 3-point range and saw the Red Raiders own a 20-11 scoring advantage off turnovers.
Texas Tech took a 37-27 lead into halftime after making seven 3-pointers and forcing 11 turnovers.
