
Tech earns ranked doubles win, falls to California

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Despite picking up a ranked doubles win on Saturday afternoon, the Texas Tech Red Raiders fell to the California Golden Bears, 6-1, at the Arnhold Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (2-2) came out hot in doubles as they recorded two wins to claim the doubles point over California (3-0). At court one, Piotr Pawlak and Sebastian Abboud had a tall task ahead as they faced the No. 30-ranked pairing of Carl Emil Overbeck and Theo Dean. The Red Raider tandem stayed hot, only giving up one game en route to the top-30 victory, 6-1.
At court three, Felipe Pagnacco and Niksa Arsic were locked in a battle with Derrick Chen and Timofey Stepanov. Leading 5-3, the Bears would get the next game to make it 5-4 before the Red Raiders clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory. At court two, freshmen Thiago Guglieri and Ludovico Vaccari were in a 6-6 tiebreaker against No. 84-ranked Michael Wright and Alex Change when their match went unfinished.
In singles, the Red Raiders had to once again face five-ranked opponents for the second match in a row. Cal was able to tie up the contest at 1-1 when No. 66 Chang defeated Vaccari at court three, 6-2, 6-2. Then, the Bears went ahead with a 6-4, 6-2 win at court two after No. 32 Dean beat Arsic. Cal's next point came from court five when No. 110-ranked Stepanov overtook Pagnacco, 6-3, 6-2. Clinching the match for the Bears was Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski as he defeated Abboud by a 6-2, 6-2 score at court six. The rest of the match played out as the Bears went up 5-1 with a victory from No. 102 Chen at court four over Guglieri, 7-6 (2), 6-4.
At the top court, Pawlak and No. 4-ranked Overbeck were neck and neck as the Bear earned the 6-3 first set win. Pawlak forced a third-set tiebreaker when he came back from a 3-5 deficit in set two to win it by a 7-6 (5) score. In the third set, the Bear won in a battle after Overbeck sealed the win with a 1-0 (8) breaker.
Up next, the Red Raiders are back at home for a doubleheader on Friday, January 31 against UTRGV and New Mexico State at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
