
Red Raiders host doubleheader on Friday

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders host their second doubleheader of the spring season as they welcome the UTRGV Vaqueros and the New Mexico State Aggies on Friday, January 31 at the McLeod Tennis Center. Tech will face the Vaqueros at 11 a.m. before taking on the Aggies at 3:30 p.m.
The Red Raiders (2-2) lead the all-time series against UTRGV with a 17-2 record, last sweeping the Vaqueros in 2024 on February 9. Tech is also leading the series against New Mexico State with a 30-4 all-time record as the Red Raiders last got a win over the Aggies on January 20, 2024 in a 7-0 sweep.
In Tech's last match against the California Golden Bears, the Red Raiders were able to take the doubles point when Niksa Arsic and Felipe Pagnacco clinched it with a 6-4 over Derrick Chen and Timofey Stepanov at court three. Art court one, Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak helped win the point with a ranked, 6-1 victory over No. 30 Carl Emil Overbeck and Theo Dean.
There are five Red Raiders who lead the team with two dual singles wins in Arsic, Thiago Guglieri, Brody Nejedly-Krall, Pagnacco and Ludovico Vaccari. In dual doubles, the tandem of Abboud and Pawlak boast a team-best three doubles wins, all coming at court one.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
The New Mexico State Aggies are 2-6 overall with their two wins coming against Marymount (4-2) and UC Riverside (4-0). Their most recent losses were against Weber State (3-4) and UNLV (2-4). In dual singles, Lance Urlaub leads with five wins, with the majority coming at court six. Right behind him is Holland Snell with four dual singles wins, all at court three. In dual doubles, the pairing of Tobias Wallin and Gustavo Campos lead the Aggies with two wins, both coming at court two.
UTRGV is 0-3 on the season with losses to No. 1 Texas (0-7), Rice (0-7) and UTSA (0-4). The Vaqueros will face Abilene Christian today at 12 p.m. before heading to Lubbock for a match against Tech tomorrow. The Vaqueros have played two players at the top court in singles so far in Ivo Isqueiro and Sam Whitehead. In dual doubles, two duos have played at court one in Whitehead/Paolo Bonaguro as well as Loic Kriegel Young/Isqueiro.
