
Lady Raiders welcome Cougars to Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders are back home at the United Supermarkets Arena as they take on the BYU Cougars this Saturday, January 18 at 6 p.m. The Lady Raiders and Cougars are tied with a 2-2 all-time record against one another, with BYU winning the last contest on January 20, 2024 by a score of 60-46 in Provo.
The Lady Raider defense was on display against Iowa State on January 14, as they snapped an NCAA record 945-game streak of the Cyclones making at least one 3-pointer in a game. Dating back to February 19, 1995 against Colorado, the Cyclones have made at least one three in every game, setting the NCAA record in most games in a row with a 3-pointer. The Lady Raiders held Iowa State to 0-for-7 from beyond the arc last Tuesday to snap the streak.
The Lady Raiders currently average 5.3 blocks per game, which ranks 17th nationally and fourth in the Big 12. In addition, junior Sarengbe Sanogo ranks 21st in the nation and third in the Big 12 with 34 total blocks. The Lady Raiders are forcing 19.84 turnovers per game which ranks 58th in the NCAA and third in the conference, and they also rank third in the Big 12 with 9.8 steals per game. The Lady Raiders have forced 20+ turnovers in eight games this season so far, and average 15.2 turnovers forced per game in conference play.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The BYU Cougars are 10-6 overall and 1-4 in Big 12 play. They have key wins over Wyoming, Colorado State, Washington State, Rice and Houston. Some losses came against West Virginia, Cincinnati, Kansas State and Arizona. The Cougars average 68.6 points per game and are allowing just 63.8 points per game. Shooting 43.3 percent from the field, BYU averages 38.6 rebounds per game and 15.6 assists per game. There are three Cougars who total double-figure scoring on the season so far – Delaney Gibb (16.6), Emma Calvert (13.4) and Amari Whiting (10.2). On the rebounding side, Marya Hudgins leads the team with 6.0 per game, followed by Whiting with 5.8 and Calvert with 5.3.
