November 03, 2025 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Both Jalynn Bristow and Bailey Maupin almost recorded triple-doubles and five players tallied double-figure scoring as the Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned a 78-40 victory over the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Monday night at the United Supermarkets Arena.
Â
Bristow had a career night as she totaled 19 points, nine rebounds, seven blocks and went 7-for-13 (.538) from the field, all career highs. She led the team in points, rebounds and blocks while adding two 3-pointers. This is also the first time since Brittany Brewer on Feb. 23, 2020 that a Lady Raider had seven or more blocks in a game.
Â
Maupin tallied 11 points, seven assists and a career-high tying eight rebounds to almost record a triple-double in the game. Senior Gemma Núñez opened up her career at Texas Tech with 15 points, four assists, a team-best four steals and five rebounds on 6-for-8 shooting (.750). Another new Lady Raider scored 15 points in Snudda Collins, who added six rebounds, a steal and a block for Tech. Senior Denae Fritz was also in double-digits after scoring 11 points and leading the team with three triples.
Â
As a team, the Lady Raiders shot 43.8 percent from the field (28-for-64) and tallied 43 rebounds, 14 assists, 11 steals and nine blocks. This marks the third game in a row dating back to last season the Lady Raiders had over 40 rebounds in a game and first time with three-straight 40+ rebound games since December 2022. Tech held North Carolina A&T to just 11 field goals in the game on 21.2 percent shooting, while also forcing 22 Aggie turnovers.
Â
Tech opened the game on a 12-1 run started by Bristow with a couple of free throws. Maupin added two more free throws just after that thanks to a block from Sarengbe Sanogo to give the Lady Raiders back the ball. At the 8:10 mark, Núñez scored her first points in the Scarlet and Black with a 3-pointer. Maupin nailed another three for Texas Tech for a 10-0 advantage before NC A&T connected with a free throw before the media timeout. Jada Malone increased the lead when she hit a layup and connected with a free throw on the and-one play. Bristow followed suit, converting a three-point play on a foul to make it 18-5. With two minutes left in the period, Collins scored her first bucket as a Lady Raider to give Tech the 20-5 advantage after one.
Â
The Aggies began scoring in the second quarter with a layup and two free throws. The Lady Raiders got their first basket of the second quarter when Bristow made a layup thanks to a dish from Maupin. Just a few seconds later, Maupin got a steal and gave it to Bristow for another easy layup to force a timeout by NC A&T. Tech finished its 11-0 run with a Fritz 3-pointer and a layup from Núñez after she grabbed an offensive rebound. The Aggies connected with a three to stop the run, but the Lady Raiders got two more free throws from Maupin to go into the half up by a score of 33-12.
Â
The Lady Raiders went on an 8-0 in the beginning minute and a half of the third quarter, highlighted by a three from Fritz and Bristow as well as a steal and layup from Núñez to force an Aggie timeout. North Carolina A&T scored the next seven points, but Collins stopped the Aggie momentum with a reverse layup. NC A&T made another bucket, followed by a three from Fritz in response. Before the media timeout, Collins scored a pull-up jumper to increase the lead to 48-23 with 4:06 left in the period. In the ensuing minutes, Núñez made two free throws, Maupin made a second-chance layup and Fritz stole the ball on an inbound play and dished it to Bristow for a layup. In the last two and a half minutes of the quarter, the teams went back and forth until Collins made a layup for the 62-29 advantage with three seconds left.
Â
Collins continued her scoring run with two free throws to open the final quarter. After forcing a shotclock turnover, Núñez made a midrange jumper for the 66-29 lead. Núñez kept up the work after making a second-chance layup and grabbing a steal to help score again right after with 3:03 left in the game. The Lady Raiders got four more points from Sanogo, with Fritz and Collins also getting in on the scoring, to win the first game of the season by a 78-40 score.

Opening statement…
"It's good to be back in the USA. It's good to be back with these girls on the court in front of our crowd. Really thankful for the people that came out and supported us. I think that they saw an exciting team and an exciting brand of basketball that they're going to enjoy watching and rooting for. NC A&T is going to win a lot of basketball games. They won their conference last year. They should have been in the NCAA tournament. They obviously have a lot of tools, but I feel like that our kids stepped out on the floor in the first two or three minutes and kind of threw the first punch. We had a lot of momentum on our side. So, I thought that was really good. Really proud of Gemma [Núñez] and her floor leadership. She really controlled the game on both ends of the floor. I thought that she was really good defensively and ran through some passing lanes and just gave us great energy… Then the pace that she pushes on offense is going to help us tremendously throughout the year. I think you saw some glimpses of Jaylnn being able to put up some big numbers. She had career night in all three categories, 19 points, nine boards and seven blocks. We just told her, she's leading the nation in blocks right now. It'll be a little while before anybody catches you, because seven is incredible. The crazy thing is, is how close that is to a triple-double. I think you're going to see that happen from her a lot, especially the double doubles with rebounds and points, and we're expecting those great things from her.  I thought all the way around, our kids played well. We talked a lot about momentum and about making sure that when momentum was going the opposite direction for us, that we would gather together, tighten our circle and switch the momentum back to our side. I thought our kids did that every time NC A&T tried to get on a little bit of a run. I thought that our kids responded really well and kept the pressure on them. So really good night. Good opening win, and we're ready to get the season rolling."

Junior guard/forward Jalynn Bristow
On what clicked over the offseason…
"It really was just focusing and locking in on exactly the shots and looks that are in our offense. So definitely getting to work on those with Coach Ketara [Chapel]… She helped a lot. And then, you know, Coach [Gerlich] was down there too, always. So, definitely looking at that short corner look, high post look and everything else that's within our offense, and not just working on every single shot."

Senior point guard Gemma Núñez
On what she learned during her time at the World University Games…
"Well, it was a great opportunity for me to see how the team works and how Coach [Gerlich] wanted to run the offense, the defense and everything. Just being on the sideline and watching how they did it helped a lot. Now in the preseason, being able to contribute to the team on the court and just doing what Coach Gerlich asked me to do, whatever the team needs me to do to win. I'll do it."
