Red Raiders defeat Lobos on Friday

LUBBOCK, Texas – Behind five singles wins on the day, the Texas Tech Red Raiders got a dominant, 6-1, victory on Friday afternoon against the New Mexico Lobos at the Lubbock Country Club.
The No. 32 ranked duo of Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak came ready to play as usual for the Red Raiders (7-6). They earned the 6-3 win on court one, defeating Alex Maggs and Arda Azkara to improve their record to 9-1 in dual matches. On court two, Reed Collier and Takeyasu Sekiguchi teamed up for the first time this season against New Mexico (7-4). Their instant chemistry led to a 6-4 victory at court two against Aram Noroozian and Georgio Samaha, clinching the doubles point for the Red Raiders.
Facing No. 93 Azkara at the top court, No. 117 Olle Wallin rose to the challenge. Wallin was able to defeat Azkara in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, giving him his second-ranked win of the season. He is now 8-3 in dual matches.
No. 122 Collier had a fantastic bounce-back performance after his sole dual loss to Middle Tennessee. He beat Noroozian, 6-2, 6-4, on court two, making him 6-1 this Spring. After a four-match losing streak, Lorenzo Esquici got things turned around on court three. He handily took the first set, 6-3, then broke serve to win the second, 6-4, clinching the match for the Red Raiders.
Freshman Niksa Arsic put up a valiant effort against Samaha on court four, forcing two tiebreakers. After trailing 2-6 in a first-set tiebreaker, Arsic rallied back to tie the score, 6-6. He unfortunately came up short, losing 6-7 (8), then did the same in the second set, 7-6 (3).
Pawlak and Abboud carried their doubles success into singles play, both winning in straight sets. On court five, Pawlak defeated Maggs in a riveting first set tiebreaker, 7-6 (10), then blazed through the second, 6-2. Abboud helped Tech to its decisive victory after defeating Matsushita 6-0, 6-4, on court six.
Up next, Texas Tech will head to San Diego, Calif, on March 15-17 to participate in the Ed Collins Invite.
