
Red Raiders compete in Ed Collins Spring Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders are heading to California to compete in the Ed Collins Invitational on March 15-17. Tech will open up the tournament with a match against the South Florida Bulls on Friday, March 15 at 11 a.m. CT at the Aztec Tennis Complex.
No. 75-ranked Texas Tech (7-6) and South Florida have only played one another three times in program history with South Florida leading the series, 2-1. The Bulls are on a two-match win streak, as the two teams last played on March 21, 2015 resulting in a 4-2 win for USF. Tech's only defeat of the Bulls came on March 24, 2006 by a 5-2 score.
Texas Tech is coming off a commanding victory against the New Mexico Lobos last week, 6-1. The Red Raiders secured their ninth doubles point of the season after getting wins at courts one and two. In singles, Tech also gained wins from Olle Wallin, Reed Collier, Lorenzo Esquici, Piotr Pawlak and Sebastian Abboud.
Tech is led in dual singles by No. 117-ranked Wallin, who boasts an 8-3 record at court one. Following Wallin is No. 122 Collier with a 6-1 record, all at court two. Pawlak is next with a 5-2 record while Abboud, Esquici, Jonas Gundacker and Niksa Arsic are all tied with four dual wins apiece. In doubles, the No. 32-ranked pairing of Abboud and Pawlak are on a roll at court one as they tally a 5-1 record at the position and a 9-1 dual doubles record. The duo of Esquici and Wallin are next with five dual doubles wins, followed by Collier and Gundacker with four victories.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The South Florida Bulls head into the match with an 8-9 overall record. Some key wins for the Bulls came against Charlotte (6-1), Penn State (6-1) and Tulane (4-3). USF has losses to Middle Tennessee (3-4), UCF (0-4) and Memphis (3-4). The Bulls are led in singles by both Erik Grevelius and Alvin Tudorica who have 10 dual wins apiece. Tom Pisane is just behind with nine dual singles wins. In doubles, Grevelius and Tudorica are the leading pair with nine wins at court one.
Other teams in the Ed Collins Invitational are No. 14 San Diego, Utah, No. 26 Princeton, Tulane, No. 22 Arizona State and San Diego State.
