No. 11 Baylor defeats Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders fell to the No. 11-ranked Baylor Bears, 4-0, on Thursday evening at the McLeod Tennis Center. Â
Baylor (20-7, 6-1 Big 12) began the match by winning the doubles point against Texas Tech (12-11, 2-6 Big 12). At court one, the Red Raider pairing of Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri started off with a quick, 6-3 win over Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz.
Baylor evened things up when Calvin Baierl and Devin Badenhorst defeated Felipe Pagnacco and Thomas Van Den Dooren, 6-3, at court three. Baylor clinched the doubles point at court two after Connor Van Schalkwyk and Luc Koenig beat Tyler Stewart and Sebastian Abboud in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3).
The Bears took a 3-0 lead in the match when Koenig overtook Pagnacco at court five, 6-4, 6-3, and No. 46 Van Schalkwyk defeated Ludovico Vaccari at court three by a 6-3, 6-4 score. Baylor's No. 35-ranked Velcz clinched the win for the Bears with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Stewart at court two.
At court six, Abboud was ahead of Louis Bowden, 6-3, 2-5, when play went unfinished. At court four, Guglieri was even with Chirita, 3-6, 6-3, when his match was stopped. Over at the top of the lineup, Arsic was close to forcing a third set over No. 7-ranked Badenhorst as he was up 5-2 and 40-30 in the second set when his match went unfinished.
Texas Tech will await results of other conference matches this week to potentially play in the Big 12 Tournament starting on April 16.
