Lady Raiders travel to Dallas to play SMU

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders are on the road for the first time this season with a contest against the SMU Mustangs on Wednesday, December 11 at 7 p.m. in Dallas. Texas Tech leads the all-time series against SMU with a 42-4 record. Tech is on a two-game winning streak against the Mustangs as the two teams last played on March 20, 2023 with the Lady Raiders winning by a 61-49 score. Tech has won 27 of the last 28 meetings against the Mustangs.
For the first time this season, the Lady Raiders have found themselves in the AP Poll. In the latest Associated Press Top-25 poll released on Monday afternoon (Dec. 9), the Lady Raiders received three total votes. Texas Tech is one of 13 teams in Division I with a 9-1 record, tying for 14th nationally in winning percentage, and is also one of 36 teams in the country with just one loss. There are only 10 teams left with a perfect winning percentage.
Junior Kilah Freelon had her best offensive rebounding performance of her career last game against SFA. With a new career-best of nine offensive rebounds, Freelon also led the team with 11 total rebounds which is the first time this season a Lady Raider had double-digit boards. She is tied for fifth in the Big 12 with 2.67 offensive rebounds per game and is also tied for sixth with 24 total offensive boards. In this game, Tech posted its season-best pf 19 offensive rebounds as well as 42 overall rebounds.
Texas Tech is second in the Big 12 and 31st in the NCAA with 29.7 bench points per game. The Lady Raiders had their most bench points against Missouri State, totaling 47 points in the game, more than half of the total points scored by the team that game (72). The Lady Raiders have now had three-consecutive games with their best shootÂing so far this season. In the contest against Gonzaga on Nov. 29, Texas Tech shot what was then a season-high, 46.4 percent from the field (26-for-56). The following night against Missouri State, the Lady Raiders shot 58.3 percent after going 28-for-48 from the field. The last time Tech shot above 50 percent from the field was in January against conference-foe Houston in Lubbock. This past game against SFA on Dec. 3, Tech shot its second-highest percentage of the year at 46.7 percent (28-for-60) while also adding its second-highest 3-pointer total at 10 made 3s.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The SMU Mustangs come into tomorrow's game with a 5-5 overall record. Their five wins came against North Carolina A&T, Western Michigan, Lamar, Arkansas – Pine Bluff and UT Arlington. Their five losses were against Old Dominion, Arizona State, Minnesota, Missouri and Florida State. SMU is averaging 70.3 points per game and holding opponents to just 65.1 points per game. Shooting 39.7 percent from the field, the Mustangs tally 42.9 rebounds per game and 14.4 assists per game. They are led in scoring by Nya Robertson, who totals 21.0 points per game, followed by Chantae Embry with 12.6. Jessica Peterson leads SMU on the rebounding side as she almost averages a double-double with 11.2 rebounds per game and 9.8 points per game.
