DALLAS – Three Lady Raiders scored in double figures, but Texas Tech would pick up its second loss of the season after falling to the SMU Mustangs, 61-57, on Wednesday evening at the Moody Coliseum.
Junior Jasmine Shavers led the way for Texas Tech (9-2) with 15 points and four rebounds, while also picking up two assists. Sophomore Jalynn Bristow had a 12-point outing after shooting 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. Bristow led Tech with four boards and added two assists and a block in the game. In addition, junior Bailey Maupin tallied 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and a team-leading three steals against SMU (6-5).
Shavers started the game with an and-one opportunity after making a driving layup and getting fouled on the play. She would convert the free throw to give Tech an early, 3-0 lead. SMU answered with a jumper, but Jada Wynn made another layup to extend Tech's advantage. However, Tech went on a scoring drought for almost four minutes as SMU took an 8-5 lead. Shavers stopped their momentum – giving Tech another two points after stealing the ball and making a layup. Then, Bristow nailed a 3-pointer for a 10-9 advantage. SMU scored the next four points to take a 13-10 lead after one.
Shavers came out of the gate with a 3-pointer to tie the game at 13-13 in the second period. Then, the Mustangs made one of their own to retake the lead. The game went back-and-forth heading into the media timeout, but one thing was certain – Bristow was having herself a quarter. Before the 4:27 mark, Bristow scored nine points, went 3-for-4 from the field, 2-for-2 from the three and added three boards, an assist and a block as Tech led 22-20. Bristow immediately followed the timeout with a charge taken to give the Lady Raiders possession. A 10-0, highlighted by a huge Kilah Freelon block, gave Tech a 28-20 advantage. SMU outscored the Lady Raiders 5-2 after that, but Tech held on to lead 30-25 at the half.
The Mustangs opened the third quarter on a 4-0 run before Tech scored six-consecutive points thanks to baskets from Sarengbe Sanogo and Shavers. SMU kept chipping away, forcing a Lady Raider turnover and scoring a layup to keep within five points, 36-31. The Mustangs went on another 4-0 run to make it 36-35, before Maya Peat made a layup to lead by three. SMU once again cut it to one with a basket, then Freelon scored a tough bucket to help Tech lead 40-37 after three periods.
Maupin nailed a 3-pointer in the first minute of the final period thanks to a dish from Denae Fritz. SMU responded with a 5-0 run over the course of three minutes before Shavers hit another Tech three to lead 46-42. SMU followed with an and-one play for three points and forced a turnover before the media timeout to cut the Tech advantage to one. After this, SMU scored five more points to lead 50-46 with 2:55 left. Maupin gave Tech a spark as she made back-to-back threes to tie the game at 52-all. SMU would get a second-chance layup to retake the lead at two with 1:03 left. SMU then took a six-point lead at the 23 second mark, until Adlee Blacklock came in and was fouled on a 3-point attempt, making two of her free throws. Blacklock then made a 3-pointer with eight seconds left. Tech tried to tie it with a steal on an in-bound play, but was unable to as the Mustangs held on to win it by a 61-57 score.
Up next, Texas Tech heads to Fayetteville, Ark., for a game against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Sunday, December 15 at 2 p.m.
