FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Today marks the first time in program history that the Texas Tech Lady Raiders won in Fayetteville as Tech defeated former Southwest Conference foe, the Arkansas Razorbacks, by a 75-72 score on Sunday afternoon at Bud Walton Arena.
The Lady Raiders (10-2) were led in scoring by junior Bailey Maupin, who almost had a new career high with a season best 25 points on 50 percent shooting from the field (7-for-14). She added a season high of five rebounds as she recorded her second 20-point game this year and ninth overall in her career.
Junior Jasmine Shavers scored 18 points and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line against Arkansas (6-6). Shavers also led the Lady Raiders with six rebounds and three assists. Graduate Maya Peat tallied her first double-figure performance of the season with a season-best 10 points while also adding a season-high of three assists to lead the team. Junior Kilah Freelon also had a 10-point performance as she went 5-for-7 from the field and added a steal and five boards.
The Razorbacks scored the first four points of the first quarter before Maupin made a second-chance jumper to cut the deficit in half. Arkansas responded with a 5-0 run before Maupin connected with a free throw. The Hogs got another layup, but Maupin was able to get a mid-range jumper in the basket as Arkansas led 11-5 going into the media timeout. This led to a 31-1 Texas Tech run, highlighted by tough buckets from Loghan Johnson and Peat, as the Lady Raiders led 16-12 to end the period.
Freelon and Johnson opened the second quarter by scoring six points for the Lady Raiders. Arkansas scored four of the next six points to make it 24-16, but Shavers gave Tech back the 10-point lead with a jumper. The Razorbacks didn't backdown – going on a 7-1 run to answer, ending it with a 3-pointer from Carly Keats. But, Maupin answered right back, getting a second-chance triple on a Freelon offensive rebound. Maupin would score again 26 seconds later to give Tech a 32-23 advantage at the media timeout. The Hogs closed out the quarter on a 6-2 run, as Tech held a 34-29 advantage going into the half.
Freelon and Shavers scored the first six points for Tech to begin the third period, giving the Lady Raiders a 40-29 lead. However, Arkansas would follow this up with a 15-3 run to tie the game at 44-all going into the media timeout. After that, Arkansas took the lead with a free throw, 45-44, then layups from Peat and Jalynn Bristow, as well as free throws from Shavers and Maupin gave Texas Tech a late lead, 57-54, going into the final quarter of the game.
In the fourth period, Arkansas scored a jumper to open the scoring, but Freelon answered right back with a layup thanks to the dish from Peat. Both teams' defenses made stops for the next minute before the Hogs recorded a couple free throws. Tech would go on a 5-0 run thanks to Maupin and Freelon to force an Arkansas timeout with a 64-58 lead. The Lady Raiders went on a 10-2 run to take a 10-point lead at 70-60, before Arkansas nailed a three to cut into it. Arkansas then scored five-consecutive points with just 1:31 left to cut the deficit to five. The Razorbacks kept trying to take the lead, but ultimately couldn't as the Lady Raiders picked up win No. 10 by a 75-72 score.
